What kind of animal lives in the water, has slimy scales, and uses gills to breate? A fish! There are a lot of different fish living in Missouri, and a lot of them are fun to catch! Come learn more about fish and how to catch them. Then after the program test your fishing skills in the Kids’ Fishing Pond!

Our natural world surrounds us, and with the weather getting nice it is basically begging to be explored! Join Discover Nature-Fishing instructor Colt Wahl as we visit the Wood Duck Swamp wetland area at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center to search for water insects and invertebrates, amphibians, and even some reptiles.

The ancient atlatl is a tool used on nearly every continent going back over 20,000 years! Made up of a spear and a throwing tool this weapon was even used to bring down the mighty woolly mammoth! Come learn the skills needed to hunt alongside our ice age ancestors in a well-controlled safe environment.

Meet one of Missouri’s more “talkative” beetles, the bess beetle. These wood-munching insects work together as a family to break down rotten logs and improve the soil. As social insects, they utilize sounds to communicate with one another. Join us to learn more about these beautiful beetles.

Everyone loves a good story, and we have plenty of them here at the nature center! You and your little one can watch and listen as our Naturalist reads a couple nature stories. This program is designed for children 0-6 years of age, but is open to all ages.

Are you as hungry as a bear? Black bears like to eat some of the things we do and some things we don’t like to eat. Find out more about the black bear and what else is on the menu as we head outside in search of food for a “bear picnic.”

Fly fishing can look intimidating to a new person. There are different rods, reels and tackle. This program will help you learn the basics to get started. We will practice casting outside so you can get the feel for this technique.

Ready for a spring stroll? Meet in the first parking lot as you enter Millstreams Gardens Conservation Area for a lovely hike to see the Tiemann Shut-ins. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear shoes suitable for the trail. This trail has moderate difficulty.

Enjoy a stroll around the gardens and grounds looking at wildflowers. we will talk about the role native plants play in a healthy habitat and yards. Native plants have many benefits for humans and wildlife and we will explore these. We can also answer question about native plats that you might want to include in your yard.

Take a virtual tour of Blue Springs Branch Conservation Area. We will delve into the history of this area and take a look at its unique topography. This area is home to a large variety of plants including some beautiful spring ephemerals. We will learn some tips and tricks on how to identify these pretty wildflowers along the way.

While many insects give people the creeps, most people agree that butterflies and moths fill our world with joy. They come in a dazzling array of colors and shapes and learning a “buckeye” from an “admiral” can be a real challenge. Join MDC naturalists to learn tricks to identify some of Missouri’s most beautiful creatures. After this program you’ll be the star of the picnic as you proudly point out the “checkerspot” sitting on your lemonade!

Pre-dating the bow and arrow by tens of thousands of years, this tool, in the hands of the Aztecs, could penetrate even Spanish armor! Join us on the front lawn of the nature center for a chance to try out this amazing tool.

Powered by human partnerships native landscaping is a movement across Missouri. This inspiring talk spotlights the eco-logical benefits for pollinators of all kinds, and people of all ages. "Green Jean" Ponzi of the EarthWays Center at Missouri Botanical Garden will give examples and discuss the possible "Feeder Roots" of this movement for your community.

Many of us have an old wooden pallet taking up space in our garage or shed. Let’s put that wood to good use by making upcycled planters for some native plants! You bring the pallet and we will provide the tools and help you transform that ugly pallet into something useful. We will also provide you with a native plant that you can add to your planter.

Orchids are exotic and mysterious, growing only in tropical rain forests. Or maybe not. Missouri is home to 40 species of native orchids. We will explore the unique role these native plants play in our habitats.

Learn embroidery techniques while also exploring Missouri’s swamps by stitching quilt blocks based on that theme. The fifth block and topic for this month is the wood duck. Please commit to attend all twelve of the monthly sessions so you will be able to complete the blocks for an entire "swamp based" quilt.

Fishing is a great way for kids and families to have fun outdoors, learn about conservation, and make happy memories. Our Discover Nature-Fishing program is a hands on, four-part fishing instruction series that helps families gain the skills and confidence they need to go fishing on their own.

Spring is truly in full swing! Take a break from strawberry picking to enjoy spring from the water on scenic Lake Girardeau. This program is an opportunity to get your friends or family out on the water. Participants will receive basic instruction and then borrow one of our kayaks for a morning on the lake.

When it comes to art, it’s easy to admire nature’s handiwork. In spring and summer our eyes are drawn to the bright colors of native flowers. Join us to learn the importance of planting natives and take home a piece of your own string art!

Be right on target! Try your hand at archery and experience a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. All archery equipment will be provided and disinfected between participants. Adult supervision is required for ages 12-17.

Join us as we explore Cape LaCroix Creek and discover the cool creatures that call it home. We will provide nets and containers for aquatic animal observation. Meet at the parking lot on Kingsway Dr, between the Lexington round-a-bout and Bantera Bank.
