County Board schedules two public meetings to get input on budget
The St.
Louis County Board will hold two public meetings to receive comments on its
2017 proposed tax levy and operating budget. The first meeting will take place
Thursday, December 1, at 7 p.m. in the Virginia Courthouse, lower level conference room.
The second meeting will be Thursday, December 8, at 7 p.m. in the County Board
Room on the second floor of the Duluth Courthouse.
The meetings will include a presentation about the budget and levy, and an opportunity for people to address the Board with questions or comments. Individuals can also meet one-on-one with staff from the Auditor's Office for questions specific to their proposed property tax statement.
With out-of-home placements and other human services costs skyrocketing, at the same time the state has failed to pass necessary funding supports, the County
Board in September set the maximum levy at $126.6 million. It's an 8.5 percent
increase from last year, though with the strong growth in the property tax base over the last two years, most people will see only a slight increase in the county portion of their bill compared to 2015. The Board is scheduled to vote on the final levy and budget
at its December 20 meeting.
