New road opens as part of Highway 5 re-alignment near Chisholm
The new County Road 136 west of Chisholm opened to traffic today, connecting Highway 73 to Highway 5. This makes it possible once again to reach Hibbing Taconite from the north and the south, and ends the detour that had been in place the last two weeks. The old portion of Highway 5 between Trunk Highway 169 and County Road 136 is permanently closed.
The work is part of the greater project to realign of CSAH 5, which is needed to accommodate an expansion of mining operations at Hibbing Taconite. The mining company is funding the project in accordance with state statute.
Additional landscaping work and other finishing touches are still in progress along the new road, and motorists are urged to use caution while traveling through the work zone.
Next year, phase two of the project will involve constructing a roundabout southwest of the intersection where the temporary traffic signal currently is being installed.
