Public Invited to Learn about Community
Development Block Grant Funds
St. Louis County has distributed $1.74 million in federal grant money this year to communities and non-profit
organizations throughout the County. Known as Community Development Block Grants, or CDBG funds,
this money helped cover costs for renovations at the Winston Court Apartments
in Hibbing, which provides affordable units to persons with disabilities;
accessibility improvements to the Rice Lake City Hall and the Embarrass Fair
Grounds; water and sewer infrastructure in nine communities; Salvation Army
meal programs in Hibbing and Virginia; and services for homeless people. CDBG funds distributed by the County are spent outside the City of Duluth. Duluth receives separate funding.
To help people better
understand how CDBG funds are awarded, and to get input on projects that may
receive funding next year, the St. Louis County Planning and Community
Development Department is hosting a combined open house and public meeting at
the following locations:
Proctor City Hall/Community Center
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1 to 3 p.m.
100 Pionk Drive, Proctor
Mountain Iron Community Center
Thursday, Sept. 15, 1 to 3 p.m.
8586 Enterprise Drive South, Mt. Iron
The
public is encouraged to attend either of the events. The agenda will be the
same at both, and includes a review of Fiscal Year 2015 accomplishments, an
overview of the CDBG program, information on the 2017 process schedule, and a
chance for citizens to provide input. Pre-application forms will be available
for anyone interested in applying for a grant.
Questions
about the open houses and public meetings or about CDBG funds in general may be
directed to St. Louis County Planning and Community Development at (218)
749-7103. Information also is available online at stlouiscountymn.gov/planning.
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars were used to pay for this waterline project in Floodwood in 2015. The project was done in partnership with St. Louis County Public Works, and is an example of how CDBG funds benefit communities and the County.
The public is invited to learn more about what's been done with CDBG dollars this year, and how to apply for next year, during two open houses hosted by the St. Louis County Planning and Community Development Department.
