New traffic signal to be installed, intersection re-configured at Rice Lake/Airport Road

The T-shaped intersection of Rice Lake Road and Airport Road is about to get a new look and traffic signal. Work begins Wednesday, August 24, to ease traffic congestion and improve safety at the busy intersection. The project, which also involves adding a median and improved street lighting, is expected to be complete in early October.

Once finished, the intersection will feature a "continuous green T signal". This means that vehicles traveling north on Rice Lake Road will always have a green light. Vehicles traveling south on Rice Lake Road, or turning in either direction to or from Airport Road will be controlled by a standard traffic light signals. Vehicles turning left onto Rice Lake Road from Airport Road will turn onto a new lane and will have 1,000 feet to accelerate before merging with northbound traffic.

During the project, Airport Road will be closed between Rice Lake Road and the entrance to Animal Allies. Rice Lake Road will remain open to traffic with lane shifts at the intersection.

The total cost of the project is $790,000, and is funded in part by Transportation Sales Tax revenue. Ulland Brothers is the project contractor.

Motorists are asked to slow down and use caution when traveling through the work zone. To learn more about this or any other St. Louis County road construction project, or to sign up for email updates, visit stlouiscountymn.gov/construction.
