Changes announced for storm debris drop-off sites

The storm debris drop off site in Grand Lake Township operated by St. Louis County will remain open an additional 15 days, until Sept. 6. The Taft Pit continues to see high activity from residents bringing in trees and branches blown down in the July 21 storm. The Taft Pit is located at 6350 Munger Shaw Road (County State Aid Highway 15), approximately half mile north of the Lost Lake Road (County Road 974) and the CN Railroad Crossing.

Meanwhile, the Arnold Pit in Gnesen Township, as previously announced, will remain open for debris drop off through this weekend, and then will close Sunday evening. The Arnold Pit is located at 6230 Arnold Road (County Road 675), approximately half mile north of Emerson Road.

A third drop-off site, the Boulder Pit on Boulder Dam Road just north of Island Lake, about a half mile north of the intersection with Highway 4, will remain open through Sept. 6, but the entrance is being moved to accommodate more debris. Signs marking the new entrance will be posted by Monday. The Boulder Pit is a joint effort between Minnesota Power and St. Louis County. Minnesota Power had opened the drop off site following storms in early July, and it is now nearly full. The new entrance will give people access to space in a county-managed pit, and will give people more time to dispose of additional tree debris.

The Skala pit on Highway 21 south of Ely is still open, and will remain open until further notice.

Signs are posted at each location. The sites are self-service for drop off of tree debris. No other yard waste, household items, construction debris or garbage is allowed.
