County Board to recognize project partners in award-winning renovation of Government Services Center

The $21 million renovation of the St. Louis County Government Services Center (GSC) is earning numerous industry awards. On Tuesday, July 5, at 9:30 a.m., St Louis County commissioners will recognize the county staff and project partners who successfully completed the project on time and under budget. The recognition will take place at the beginning of the County Board meeting, held at the Duluth Courthouse.

Among the awards the project has received so far:

  • Finance & Commerce has named it a Top Project for 2015
  • AIA Minnesota (American Institute of Architecture) selected it as one of four Merit Award recipients for 2016
  • IIDA Northland (International Interior Design Association) honored it with a 2016 FAB award for Community and Civic design

Among those contributing to the success of the project are: Perkins & Will, architectural design; Johnson & Wilson, general contractor; Gausman & Moore, mechanical and engineering design; Northern Business Products; Krech & Ojard, project management partner; Hunt Electric, electrical contractor; Shannon's, mechanical contractor; plus more than a dozen employees from the County's Property Management division and other departments.

The renovation of the seven-story, 165,000 square foot Government Services Center took nearly two years, but was accomplished with no disruption in service to citizens. Nine county departments, which formerly had been spread across five buildings in downtown Duluth, are now located in the GSC, providing citizens more convenient access to county services.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the County Board will hold a public hearing on the issuance of up to $25 million in capitol improvement bonds to fund various transportation projects. The bonds would be paid back using revenue from the Transportation Sales Tax.
