Bridge replacement project begins next week on Highway 21 near Babbitt

A portion of County State Aid Highway 21 northwest of Babbitt will close beginning Tuesday, July 5. The closure is necessary as construction crews replace the old bridge that spans the Birch River. The project is expected to last until early October.

A detour will be posted, directing motorists to use County Road 583 (Virginia Ely Road), CR 795 (Lemont Road) and CR 904.

The existing structure is more than 80 years old and has reached the end of it serviceable life. It was first built in 1934 as a concrete box culvert. It was remodeled and extended in 1955 as part of a road reconstruction project. The new bridge, a single span concrete beam bridge measuring approximately 80-feet long, will cost just over $1 million, with funding coming from Transportation Sales Tax revenue.

Northland Constructors of Duluth is the contractor for the project.
