Road closure begins June 20 on Highway 136 in Chisholm

Reconstruction of a 1.2 mile segment of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 136 is now underway in Chisholm. The project spans from CSAH 5 to Trunk Highway 73. Motorists are reminded to observe all construction zone traffic control signage and work zone speed limits, and to remain alert for construction traffic and flagger instructions when travelling through or near the construction zone.

Beginning next week, June 20, CSAH 136 will be closed to thru traffic. Motorists will be able to access the businesses on the east end of the project from Highway 73.

The reconstruction project is necessary to realign CSAH 5 in order to accommodate an expansion of mining operations at Hibbing Taconite. Once completed, CSAH 136 will become CSAH 5 and the old alignment of CSAH 5 will be closed. This phase of the project should be complete by late September

The project is being funded by Hibbing Taconite in accordance with state statute. Hoover Construction Company of Virginia is the contractor.

Next year, phase two of the project will involve constructing a roundabout at the new intersection of Highway 73 and CSAH 5. Starting this fall, a temporary traffic signal will be placed at the intersection of CSAH 136 and Highway 73, and will remain until the roundabout is complete.
