Senior named National Merit Semifinalist

Stillwater Area High School senior Meghana Acharya has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. She is among just 16,000 high school students from across the country to receive this honor. About 1.6 million juniors entered the 2020 National Merit Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screening. The highest scoring entrants from each state are named semifinalists and will go on to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

Senior year planning

Counseling

Homecoming week provided a college and career growth opportunity for the SAHS class of 2020. During the week, SAHS counselors visited each senior English course to discuss the planning and preparation needed for the senior year to be successful. This is a a big year for students to know timelines, deadlines, decisions they must make, and preparation for the next step beyond SAHS. Counselors spent the class time presenting information ranging from graduation requirements, to U.S. military recruitment visits, to different forms of college applications and scholarships. All this comes to a finale very quickly on May 30, 2020 with the Stillwater Area High School Graduation Ceremony at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul. The presentation can be viewed HERE.  Contact your counselor with further questions!

Let’s Talk: Fighting the Vaping Epidemic Together!

vape

Stillwater Area Public Schools takes e-cigarette use very seriously due to the negative health effects vaping has on its students. It is essential that we come together to equip ourselves with the knowledge and support systems necessary to help our youth in making positive decisions for themselves and their future.

Vaping is the inhaling and exhaling of an aerosol using a vape device, also known as an electronic cigarette (common brands include JUUL, SMOK Novo, Suorin). The numerous health impacts from aerosolized products combined with the addictive nature of nicotine can have long-lasting impacts on youth brain development. We know using nicotine may make it harder for school-related tasks, such as learning and concentration. Furthermore, the chemicals found in these products have been linked to cardiovascular issues and other potential health concerns.

In October 2018, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) issued a health advisory, echoed by the U.S. Surgeon General in December 2018, regarding an epidemic vaping trend among teens.

We encourage you to engage in meaningful conversations with your child(ren) about the dangers of participating in vaping culture. Our goal is to partner with parents, caring adults and the community to ensure our youth are healthy.

A piece of Pony history to be displayed at SAHS

1922 football helmet

A piece of Ponies Football history will soon be on display at Stillwater Area High School. A leather helmet belonging to Herbert Bieging (Class of 1923) was recently donated to SAHS by his daughter, Marlene Bieging Eder Schrade (Class of 1955).

After graduation, Herbert went on to study violin at the University of Berlin. While in Germany, he toured with Marlene Dietrich, the German-American actress and singer.
