Students to report to school on Feb. 18 for "make-up day"

The school board on Feb. 7 approved a change to the school calendar to provide a make-up day in response to the unexpected snow/cold days in January.

Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 18, will now be a school day for middle and high school students. Five minutes will also be added to the end of that school day to reach the instructional hours threshold. Preschool and elementary students will not need to come to school, as this will be a parent/teacher conference day.

We understand this is short notice for families and we apologize for the inconvenience. If your middle school or high school student will not be in attendance on Feb. 18 we just ask that you enter it as an absence in Skyward.

While Feb. 18 wasn’t a regularly scheduled school day, this change is necessary to help us meet the minimum instruction hours for our students in grades 6-12 - which is required by state law.

Ski teams finish well in state tourney

Congrats to the girls and boys ski teams!

The Nordic girls team finished 3rd at state and the boys placed 4th - just one point off the podium.

In alpine skiing, the boys finished 5th at state, while the defending state champion girls placed 7th.

Let’s Talk: Partnering to Prevent Student Vaping and Other Nicotine Use

chemical health

While the ‘Let’s Talk’ blogs focuses on empowering parents and caregivers to support their youth in making healthy decisions, schools and communities are also working hard to address the teen vaping epidemic. Stillwater Area Public Schools is alarmed by this trend and trying to educate not only teens, but also themselves by:

  • Hosting staff development and parent presentations on chemical health with a specific focus on vaping
  • Including information on vaping in packets to staff about safety and security reminders
  • Increasing supervision of bathrooms
  • Educating students in health classes and other guest presentations
  • Offering restorative opportunities for students caught vaping at school such as YCAPP, and referrals to internal and outside resources
  • Distributing health-based information on educational posters around the school from the MN Department of Health
  • Continuing to explore resources and creative responses to prevent and reduce student vaping

Many communities have already passed Tobacco 21 policies to limit youth access to tobacco until age 21, when the portion of the brain responsible for rational decision-making is more fully developed.

Let’s continue working together to support the health and well-being of our youth!
