Have a safe and enjoyable winter break!

School will be out of session through January 1. We look forward to seeing students and staff back on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018. In this season of joy and thanksgiving, our staff would like to express gratitude for our amazing Pony families. Thank you for all you do to support our schools and help us care for our students!

What will our students need to succeed in life?

SAVE YOUR SEAT to join us as we explore the changing global economy and what it means for our students, our communities and our schools. We'll be holding two Community Conversations in January to dig deeper into this topic and gather feedback from our community.

  • Jan. 9, 2018, 6 p.m. at Stillwater Area High School
  • Jan. 23, 2018 6 p.m. at Stillwater Middle School

It's all part of our effort to develop a Portrait of a Graduate, which will serve as the foundation of our next strategic plan. Learn more.

During these sessions, participants will watch a series of short videos and engage in discussions about how we can adapt to better meet the needs of our students.

Word detective

Student detectives decode challenging words

As part of the Word Detective reading unit, first graders are learning strategies to become stronger readers by taking a closer look at words. Students have learned how to use their knowledge of sight words, as well as how to consider blends, digraphs, endings, and compound words to decode new and challenging words.

The Word Detective unit is part of a new literacy program that is being piloted in dozen of classrooms across the district. Read more.

Making News: Yoga Calm featured on WCCO

Check out the WCCO-TV story about how students are practicing yoga as a way to help them stay calm and focus on learning. Lake Elmo Elementary is leading the way in this effort, but other schools across the district are also beginning to train staff to incorporate movement in classrooms to promote learning.

Rutherford students spread warm wishes to cancer patients
Patients at Lakeview Hospital will be a little warmer this winter thanks to Rutherford Elementary students. Members of the school peace group made 100 fleece scarves to give to oncology patients. The students also sent cards to senior citizens and military members serving overseas.

head start wishes

Stillwater Middle Schoolers give gifts to preschoolers
The Builders Club at Stillwater Middle School granted the winter wishes of some local Head Start students. They raised $2,180 to purchase items on the preschoolers’ wish list. The students went shopping, wrapped the gifts and delivered them this week. They also visited with the little kids, reading them a story and making some crafts. Thank you to all who donated.

Brookview students celebrate wonder
Brookview Elementary students celebrated a different kind of Winter Wonderland this year. Instead of snowflakes and frozen landscapes, students displayed kindness and compassion for themselves and others.

They heard inspiring stories from two guest speakers, including SAHS juior Fatima Menawa. They also participated in a variety of activities centered around kindness, wonder and self-care. Read more.
