Honoring veterans around the district

Students and staff observed Veterans Day by paying tribute to those who served in the armed forces. Many schools held special assemblies where veterans were invited to attend to hear patriotic songs and messages, while other students made cards to give to veterans at local nursing homes. Board considers calendar options for 2018-2019

School board members are considering two variations of a calendar for the coming school year. Both calendar options have school beginning the week before Labor Day, and feature staggered starts to provide students transitioning to new buildings with time to familiarize themselves with their new school environments. The difference between the two calendar options is the schedule for elementary students. Read more and view the two calendar options.

  • Option A is similar to the current year, with kindergarten beginning two days later for Ready, Set Go conferences.
  • Option B extends Ready, Set, Go conferences to all elementary students grades K-5.

Designing a new way for middle schoolers to learn

Matt Howe’s classroom at Oak-Land Middle School is alive with activity during third and fifth hour each day.  It’s noisy, and might feel a bit chaotic, but if you ask the students they’ll tell you the Design and Make class is one of the best parts of their day.

The class is based on the design process used by engineers and other professionals charged with creating new innovations, and it allows students to dream up an idea and make it a reality. Read more.
