Tax Professional Tip #16 – Return Verification and Identity Verification Letters

Tax Pro Tips

The Minnesota Department of Revenue takes extra steps to protect your clients’ identities.

If your client receives either of these letters, ask them to complete the steps in the letter as soon as possible. Their tax return will not be processed until they complete these steps.

Return Verification Letter

We may send return verification letters to confirm whether clients filed a tax return or that their preparers filed on their behalf.

You may call us to complete the process for them if they do not have access to a computer or the internet. If you call us without your client present, you must have a limited power of attorney on file for the return in question.

Identity Verification Letter

We may send identify verification letters to confirm clients’ identities.

Clients may submit the requested documents electronically on some of these letters. Once they upload their documents successfully, they will receive a confirmation. We will also accept documents by mail.
