Minnesota Department of Revenue

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is aware of an unexpected outage to a specific tax preparation software that prevented some taxpayers from filing returns by the September 15, 2020 due date.

What happens if my client was impacted by this outage?
The department will accept as timely filed a return that was impacted by the September 15, 2020 software outage if the taxpayer successfully e-filed the return by September 17, 2020, or any other date allowed by Minnesota statute.  Impacted taxpayers who have not yet filed should do so as soon as possible. Taxpayers who do not file or pay in a timely manner may receive a penalty notice from the department.

What happens if my client receives a penalty notice?
You may ask us to abate (cancel) late-payment or late-filing penalties or interest if you have a reasonable cause, such as circumstances beyond your control. See Penalty Abatement for Individuals and Penalty Abatement for Businesses.

Instructions on how to request an abatement are included in the penalty notice.
