It’s hard to believe that summer is over and the 2016 Individual Income Tax filing season is right around the corner.  There are several things happening within Minnesota right now to prepare for this next season and I wanted to provide you with a brief update.

Letter of Intent (LOI):
Minnesota has adopted a national version of the Letter of Intent.  The version without links to the protected national standards is available on our website.  If you are interested in offering electronic return preparation in Minnesota, the first step in doing so is to complete the Letter of Intent

Access to Schema Information:
This year we will be using the new Federal Tax Administration (FTA) technical solution to post copies of our schema information.  Once you are approved as a software provider we will provide access to this information.  Our state individual return schema has been loaded to this site.  A draft of our business schema package will be available by October 3.

Minnesota Leads Reporting:
As we did last year, Minnesota will have some lead reporting elements that are different from the Summit National Leads.  Just as we did last year, we will provide a leads schema for you to program.  A spreadsheet which lists elements for this schema is now available through the FTA technical solution, and we update you when the completed schema file is available.  As always, whether it’s in a lead requirement or not, if you see something questionable we encourage you to reach out to us and we will do the same, so that we can work together to protect taxpayers.

Just as we did last year, we will use Move.IT to get the reports from you and provide the reports from us.

Conference Call:
As you know, each year we hold a conference call to walk you through forms and instructions for this year and provide answers to questions you may have.  That call will be held on September 21.  If you haven’t registered and would like to, here is the link.  If you aren’t already signed up for our email notifications.  You can sign up by going to the home page of our website and in the lower right corner you will see a red envelope.  Click on the envelope and complete your information.  Select the software providers subscription type.

We appreciate working with you and look forward to a great filing season.

Sincerely,

Terri Steenblock
Assistant Commissioner of Individual Taxes
