Greetings, District 2!
As we saw the autumn leaves blanket our beautiful district in October, I'm excited to bring you the latest updates in our newsletter. This month has been marked by meaningful progress and community engagement, highlighting the vibrancy and resilience of our neighborhoods.
We've made significant strides in public safety, infrastructure improvements, and organizing events that foster our sense of togetherness. Notably, the Active Living Ramsey Communities Quarterly Meeting took place on October 14, 2024, where we discussed important topics like the ADA Transition Plan and made plans for future community feedback. Many thanks to Ramsey County Active Living Coordinator, Connie Bernardy, Public Works staff and those who attended for the great meeting.
The Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC) District 10 Meeting was held on October 28, 2024, focusing on refining policy positions and addressing county-specific issues. We had a great visit from Shakopee High School Students who are enrolled in their Human Services Academy. A program that partners with Scott County to give students the opportunity to learn and engage in the work in human development, psychology, legal fields, education, law enforcement and public services. We also learned about the Scott County Treatment Courts which offer alternative sentencing approaches for non-violent offenders who are at high risk for recidivism and struggling with addiction to drugs or alcohol. These courts provide a structured, closely monitored treatment-based probation program, aiming to reduce addiction and criminal behavior. Thank you, Scott County for the engaging and educational session!
Ramsey County also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, honoring the rich cultural contributions of our Hispanic community. Furthermore, we recognized that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we are committed to raising awareness and supporting those affected by domestic violence. This month, we also celebrated Indigenous Peoples' Day, acknowledging and honoring the rich history and contributions of Indigenous communities in our region.
In the October meeting of the Roseville Area Optimist Club, Superintendent Jenny Loeck spoke about the Roseville Area Schools vision for equity and innovation. She was joined by Niceta Thomas, the Executive Director of Student Services, and four brilliant "Advanced Via Individual Determination" (AVID) students who shared their experiences and insights on being prepared for life after High School for educational and career endeavors.
Thank you for your continued support and participation. It's your involvement that helps us thrive and grow as a community.
Best wishes,
Mary Jo McGuire Ramsey County Commissioner, District 2
The board of commissioners has recognized September 15 through October 15, 2024, as Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic and Latine individuals and community groups in Ramsey County, and across the metropolitan region and state of Minnesota, have made profound impacts in society and have contributed to the rich cultural diversity in these communities.

The board of commissioners declare October 3, 2024 as Licensed Family Child Care Provider Recognition Day. Children are one of our greatest resources and strengths and Ramsey County is committed to the nurturing of children. Licensed Family Child Care Providers are essential workers who provide a safe and healthy environment that fosters the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children. Ramsey County has nearly 245 licensed family childcare providers caring for children.
The board of commissioners declares October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Ramsey County. As a county, we acknowledge that solutions to end domestic violence will only happen with the commitment of our entire community to ensure the safety of victims, and in working tirelessly with our community-based partners in realizing an equitable and violence-free community for all. Many are wearing purple in recognition of Domestic Violence awareness.
A few Ramsey County Commissioner's and staff attended Mpact Transit + Community Conference. Mpact is an annual event that focuses on the interplay of transit, mobility, land use, and development in building great places to live for everyone. This year it took place in Philadelphia from October 20-23, 2024. This conference brings together cross-sector leaders, practitioners, and advocates from across the United States and Canada to focus on the challenges facing transit-oriented communities and innovative solutions to meet them. There were discussions on topics such as transit, mobility, land use, and development, sharing practical, proven ways to create great places to live for everyone. The conference featured engaging sessions, mobile workshops, and networking opportunities, fostering a community-first approach to transit and development projects.
Indigenous People's Day
October 14th was Indigenous Peoples Day. The land in present day known as Ramsey County is located on the ancestral lands of the Dakota Oyate and is also home to the Ojibwe and Ho-Chunk peoples. Ramsey County recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day as an important time to celebrate the rich culture, tradition, history and contributions of America's original people, without whom, the building of this county would not have been.

Operation Green Light
Five Ramsey County-owned buildings are illuminated green until the end of Veterans Day as part of Operation Green Light, a nationwide initiative to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported.
This is the third year of Operation Green Light, led by the National Association of Counties. It is designed to raise awareness around the unique challenges veterans face and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.
