Even though we are seeing record unemployment rates in Minnesota due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still many employers who are seeking employees. Ramsey County Workforce Solutions and Community & Economic Development have expanded resources to help connect job seekers with organizations currently hiring on Ramsey County Means Business.com.
Additionally, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is beginning to host virtual job fairs. On April 16, the first virtual job fair was held and recorded. DEED’s Career Force also has many other great resources for both employers and job seekers. Both DEED and Ramsey County are working to create more interactive opportunities for job seekers to connect with employers who are hiring during this time.

Virtual Youth Voice Event
When:
Friday, June 12, 2020 2 - 4 p.m.
Because of the pandemic, Youth Works! had to cancel the in-person Youth Voice event scheduled for April 21. To keep the momentum of the Youth Works! initiative, and because it is more critical now than ever to center impacted voices, Youth Works! is in the process of planning a digital Youth Voice event.
During this event, young people are invited to join us in a video call to discuss what their input, ideas and solutions to the challenges of engaging youth in work experiences. If you are interested in helping to plan or promote this event, please contact Rachael.

Data Deep Dive
We continue to dig into data about our community’s young people (ages 14-24). Where are they working? Who is employing them? How much are they earning? We hope this information will help you be more observant of young people in your office or down the street.
- Youth and young adults have not been exempted from the recent surge of COVID-19 related layoffs.
- Between March 16 and April 28, 46,320 young people, ages 16-24, have applied for unemployment in the Twin Cities Planning Region.
- The number is nearly 16% of all individuals who applied for unemployment during this time period.
- This data does not include full-time students who have lost their employment, as they are ineligible for unemployment.
Youth Works! Partner: White Bear Lake Area Schools & WBL Career Pathways
WBLAS and WBL Career Pathways appreciate the work and support of MN Department of Labor & Industry and the opportunities that Youth Skills Training has provided for their students. To date, 46 high school students have become Certified Nursing Assistants with the MN Nursing Assistant Registry. Not only does this experience put students at the frontline in the healthcare industry, they are also seeing some of our CNA and WBLAHS graduates working full-time as essential employees
It is more important than ever that we continue to support youth and their career pathways, so they too can become a part of the solution. When we support our youth, they will support our community in return. Our current CNA students have applied at local organizations with provisional status to start work immediately to support their community, families, and their own career path.
Phyllica Dehoop is a 2019 WBLAHS Graduate who is currently working full-time as a CNA. She will be starting her Nursing Program at Rasmussen College in the Fall.

“The CNA Program has helped me pursue my dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. Thank you!” -Phyllica
