Compassion fatigue prevention on February 16 - plus additional offerings for MRC

Compassion Fatigue Prevention and Self Care

I am delighted to announce a special training opportunity with the University of Minnesota's own Tai Mendenhall this February. Dr. Mendenhall will share evidence-based strategies for preventing and repairing burnout and compassion fatigue - tools I think most of us in the helping professions need badly.

Dr. Mendenhall is a Medical Family Therapist and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota (UMN). He is also Director of the UMN’s Medical Reserve Corps’ Mental Health Disaster-Response Teams and works actively in the conduct of collaborative family healthcare and community-based participatory research.

Thursday, February 16

Light refreshments will be available, along with continuing education credits for some professions. Please email me for additional information.

Psychological First Aid Train-the-Trainer

Please note: this in-person, daytime training is for MRC volunteers who have already taken the basic Psychological First Aid (PFA) class online or in person.

In conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Health, we are providing a specialized train-the-trainer course that will support you in sharing PFA with others. The course is designed to support trainers in preparing to deal with the emotional and psychosocial impact of a public health emergency.

Tuesday, February 28

9:30 AM to 1 PM

Additional training in Dakota County

Our colleagues at Dakota County are offering training on suicide prevention on Tuesday, February 28.

QPR, or “Question, Persuade, and Refer,” is a presentation covering the three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

February 28, 2017 - 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Location:  First Floor Conference Room 110A  Dakota County Northern Service Center West St. Paul, MN

Some of you know that I recently hosted our first training for 2017, Individual and Family Preparedness Night, alongside County Emergency Manager Karma Kumlin-Diers.  Five of our attendees completed an optional evaluation, and it looks like knowledge around critical preparedness concepts (like creating a basic kit, or understanding the hazards in our area) improved as a result of this training.

As always, it is a delight to coordinate this volunteer group and to get a chance to talk with each of you. I'm looking forward to working with you throughout 2017: I think we can do even more to build community and take care of each other across Ramsey County.

Keep in touch,
