Open house in Lakeland Sept. 18

Minn. Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Minn. Department of Health (MDH) staff will be available to answer questions about groundwater contamination in the Lakeland and Lakeland Shores area at an open house from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The open house will be held at the Lakeland City Hall, located at 690 Quinnell Ave. N.

At 6:00 p.m., MPCA and MDH staff will make presentations before the Lakeland City Council. Drinking water wells in the Lakeland and Lakeland Shores areas are a priority for testing for PFC contamination. Some wells in this area are also contaminated with volatile organic compounds from another source.

In February 2018,  Minnesota and the 3M Company settled their lawsuit regarding natural resource damages associated with a group of chemicals known as PFCs. 3M is making a grant of $850 million as a condition of the settlement to address two priorities in the east metro area. Priority 1 is safe drinking water and groundwater sustainability. Priority 2 is restoring and enhancing natural resources.
