Consultant Assigned to Northeast Park Master Plan

Hoisington Koegler Group Approved by Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board

As snow melts and the ground thaws—
Look for signs of preparation for spring and summer outdoor programming

At the April 3 board meeting, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) approved a professional services agreement with Hoisington Koegler Group Inc. (HKGi). HKGi was selected to help develop a Master Plan for Northeast Park.

Based on community needs, the Master Plan will recommend facilities and the placement of the facilities within the park. This will include the preferred location for a new recreation facility. The design of the recreation facility will be determined in a future phase of community engagement and will be coordinated with the system-wide recreation facility plan. The outcomes of the Master Plan and future recreation facility planning will direct future capital investments in the park. The MPRB’s 5-year Capital Improvement Program currently includes $4,000,000 for building and site improvements and $1,150,000 in field and site improvements.

“We are looking forward to getting the master planning process started as we prepare for spring and summer programming,” said Commissioner Liz Wielinski. “And we encourage you to sign up for the many opportunities throughout the project to join the conversation and to share your ideas.”

As the weather warms, there will be some construction activity on the north end of the park. This work will focus on relocating utilities that were connected to the recreation center. The relocation will allow lights on the fields for spring and summer programming.

There are many ways for the community to participate in the plan development and to share your ideas for the new park improvements and facility. Join the conversation and get involved by signing up for updates and attending upcoming meetings to have your ideas heard. MPRB welcomes everyone to get involved and to share their ideas—look for announcements and upcoming meetings by visiting the project webpage. To stay in the know, sign up for the Northeast Park email list or call 612-230-6464.

The projected planning process is as follows: the master park plan to be developed in 2013, a recreation facility plan to follow in 2014, with a construction and groundbreaking date slated for 2015.
