Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Begins Marking Ash Trees Infested with Emerald Ash Borer for Removal

Approximately 50 Ash Trees Located on Private Propery to Be Removed

On Wednesday, March 6, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) forestry staff began marking infested ash trees located on private property in and around the Prospect Park / E. River Rd Neighborhood near Tower Hill Park.

Trees marked with a green ring around the trunk indicate that it is infested with Emerald ash borer (EAB). Currently, about 50 infested trees have been identified for condemnation and removal. This determination has been made in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

When a tree is marked for removal, a door tag will be left on the property to notify property owners of the infestation and briefly outline the removal process. Within a few days, the MPRB will send property owners a more detailed letter which explains the options available for tree removal and disposal. The letter will also reference the Minneapolis City Ordinance which authorizes the MPRB to condemn trees located on private property.

Removing infested trees is an important component of the MPRB's EAB Preparedness Plan. More information on the removal of diseased or hazardous trees on private property can be found on the MPRB website.
