Mountain bike trail addition and skills park coming to Theodore Wirth and Bryn Mawr parks
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has begun construction of new natural surface trails at two locations:
Construction of this long-awaited addition is underway now. The new trail will include an advanced segment just northeast of the existing mountain bike trails. It will likely be the longest downhill segment in this area of the park, with some fun features built by the trail contractor and volunteers from Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists (MORC).
Public Impacts
- Work will take several weeks to complete; however, no trail closures are expected.
- Please watch for construction equipment and avoid areas under construction.
- Do not ride on the new trail until "open" signs are installed. Doing so will add costs for the trail builder and volunteers.
Catering to beginners and more advanced riders alike, the course incorporates features once located on the park's old tennis courts. They are being reinstalled in the park's northeast corner, in the woods near the Luce Line Trail and new pedestrian/bicycle bridge to the Bassett Creek Valley Station on the Metro Transit Green Line. The new location allows cyclists to build their skills in a wooded setting similar to Twin Cities mountain bike trails, with plenty of shade.
The skills features will be laid out along a natural surface trail in a loop with two entry/exit points. Riders will be able to choose whether to ride over some of the more challenging features, like a teeter-totter or 6-inch balance beam.
