METRO E Line construction update: July 4, 2025

We have updated our construction map for the METRO E Line.  You can find it at the top of our project web page.  

Work is happening at these stations:

Dates are approximate and subject to change. As the construction season continues, crews may begin Saturday work at specific locations to maintain the overall project schedule. Future newsletter updates will include details where known.

Westgate Station (University & Berry):

Week of July 7:

• Crews will construct sidewalks.
• Crews will stripe the roadway and erect signage.
• Following the completion of civil construction, work is focused on installation of lighting and E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

University & Malcolm:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will continue sawcutting and removal of concrete.
• This work includes the use of heavy machinery, and impacts such as vibrations, loud noise, and dust and debris are to be expected.
• Crews will work on underground utilities.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will grade surfaces and construct curb, gutter, and roadway surfaces.

University & 27th Avenue:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will work on underground utilities.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will grade surfaces and construct curb, gutter, and roadway surfaces.

*Please note that the above detour will not go into effect until the week of June 16

University & Huron-23rd Avenue:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will construct roadway surfaces.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will work on underground utilities.
• Crews will grade surfaces and construct sidewalks.

4th Street & Central:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will continue to construct sidewalks.
• Crews will stripe the roadway and erect signage.
• Following the completion of civil construction, work is focused on installation of lighting and E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

Hennepin & Gateway:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will construct remaining sidewalks and bike lanes on the east side of the intersection.
• Crews will switch traffic control to the west side of the intersection.
• Crews will work on sawcutting and removal of concrete.
• This work includes the use of heavy machinery, and impacts such as vibrations, loud noise, and dust and debris are to be expected.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will work on underground utilities.
• Crews will work on sawcutting and removal of concrete.

Hennepin & Spruce-Laurel:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will begin construction on the west side of the intersection.
• Crews will continue sawcutting and removal of concrete on both sides of the intersection.
• This work includes the use of heavy machinery, and impacts such as vibrations, loud noise, and dust and debris are to be expected.
• Crews will construct sidewalks and bike lanes on the east side of the intersection.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will construct sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and roadways.
• Crews will stripe and install signage on the east side of the intersection.

Hennepin & Groveland:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will work on underground utilities.
• Crews will grade surfaces and construct sidewalks.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will construct sidewalks.
• Crews will stripe roadways and erect signage.

Hennepin & 36th Street:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will grade and construct sidewalks.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will sign and stripe the area before removing traffic control.

Richfield Road & Bde Maka Ska:

Following the completion of civil construction, work is focused on installation of lighting and E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

Sheridan & 39th Street:

Week of July 7:

• Crews will construct remaining sidewalk finish restoration activities on the south side of the intersection.
• Crews will work on underground utilities.
• Crews will continue sawcutting and removal of concrete on the north side of the intersection.
• This work includes the use of heavy machinery, and impacts such as vibrations, loud noise, and dust and debris are to be expected.

Week of July 14:

• Crews will work on underground utilities.
• Crews will grade soil in preparation for pouring concrete.

44th Street and Abbott:

Following the completion of civil construction, work is focused on installation of lighting and E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

France & 62nd Street

Note: The City of Edina is currently constructing sidewalks along the east side of France Avenue between 60th and 62nd streets. This is not METRO E Line work. To learn more about this project or if you have a concern, please reach out to Chad Millner at the City of Edina. 

Following the completion of civil construction, work will be focused on installation of E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

Southdale Hospital

Following the completion of civil construction, work is focused on installation of lighting and E Line platform amenities. We will update this section when we have timelines for this work.  

Additional work that will happen this year:

Final completion of stations will occur this year as Metro Transit prepares for the launch of E Line service. After civil construction of station platforms is complete, installation of station amenities (including shelters, real-time signs, bike racks, and benches) and equipment testing will occur. These activities are expected to take only a few days at each site and will cause minimal disruption to traffic.

Platform construction will also be completed at several stations through coordinated projects with Metro Transit’s partners including:

• Hennepin County – University and Fourth roadway improvements: University & U of M Rec Center, University & 15th Avenue, University & 11th Avenue   
• City of Minneapolis – Hennepin Ave. S. Reconstruction: Hennepin & Franklin, Hennepin & 25th Street

What to expect during construction

In addition to stations, E Line construction activities also include installation of fiber optic communication infrastructure and construction of additional pedestrian, traffic signal, bikeway, and intersection improvements delivered in partnership with Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis.  

• Work in the corridor includes station construction, utility work, pavement and intersection improvements, and traffic signal changes.
• Expect temporary lane restrictions and marked detours for traffic.
• Pedestrian access will remain for businesses and residences.
• Buses will experience detours during construction. Up-to-date information about bus detours and temporary stop locations can be found at metrotransit.org/alerts and by subscription to Rider Alerts.  
• Construction will be staged at each station intersection to allow for vehicular traffic flow.
