METRO B Line services begin June 14
As we near the B Line opening on June 14, 2025, the B Line newsletter will focus on what to expect with the new service while keeping you updated on final project work.
More information will be shared in the coming months about opening day celebration activities and changes to local bus service that will complement the B Line and keep customers connected. Stay tuned!
Construction of the B Line and Lake Street Improvements was almost entirely completed in 2023 and 2024. The following work remains to be done this spring:
-
Traffic Signals: Crews recently finished upgrades at Portland, Park, and 21st. Work east of Dupont wraps up next week, with west of Dupont finishing by mid-March. Lake/Lagoon & Dupont signals will be completed later this spring. Transit signal priority west of Hiawatha is coming soon.
-
Street Lighting: Final streetlight repairs will be completed this spring once ground frost thaws and weather permits.
-
Bus-Only Lanes: Crews will be back this spring to finish painting bus-only lanes between Chicago and 4th avenues.
-
Pylons & Real-Time Signs: Installation of station pylons and real-time NexTrip signs is expected to start in March.
-
Fare Collection Equipment: Installation of ticket machines and fare card readers also will begin in March.

In the coming months, ticket machines and fare card readers will be installed at future B Line stations. To ride the B Line, customers will pay before boarding for a faster, smoother ride.

Until the METRO B Line launches on June 14, even if boarding at future B Line stations, customers will still need to board buses in the front and show the bus operator valid proof of fare payment or pay onboard.

Once the B Line launches, customers will pay before boarding using ticket machines and card readers at the station or Metro Transit’s app on their smartphone. Customers will be able to enter the bus through any door and will not need to show the driver proof of fare payment. Proof of fare payment is still required, with fares instead being checked by TRIP Agents or Metro Transit Police. Learn more about Metro Transit’s presence on our system.
