A Route 21 bus serving customers at the future Lake & Chicago B Line station
Staff are available to attend community events or meetings to connect and answer questions about construction. To have staff visit your next event, contact bline@metrotransit.org
Newsletters to return to monthly status
With most significant project construction now substantially complete, project newsletters will return to monthly distribution, with the next project newsletter to come in early December.
As crews complete sidewalk, curb, and station work, one of the final items to complete in this year’s construction process is a mill and overlay to provide a new, smoother pavement surface. A mill and overlay process involves grinding the top layer of asphalt off the street and using a large machine to recycle and re-pave the asphalt.
Mill and overlay work will take place beginning Nov. 4 between Lake & Dean and Lake & France.
Crews will also be touching up the red paint on East Lake Street over the next few days, starting early in the morning and going into the evening
Schedule
-
Almost all B Line shelters have been installed. There are no shelter installations scheduled for this week. Remaining shelter installations at Lake & Nicollet and Lake St./Midtown Station will be completed in the coming weeks.
-
Shelters will not be available for customer use immediately upon installation and will be fenced off. Crews will need to complete several tasks to ensure shelters are safe and ready for regular route service. Shelters are expected to be available for customer use later this year.
-
For the remainder of 2024 and into next year, crews will be periodically at future B Line station locations installing remaining elements such as electronics, bike racks, camera systems, and garbage and recycling at the stations.
Bus-only lanes
- Crews will return to E. Lake Street between Minnehaha and W. River Parkway to touch up red bus-only lanes beginning today and will be complete before Nov. 15. This work will involve temporary, roving limitation of parking on the north side of the street.
- Due to weather conditions, crews will not be able to complete painting any remaining new bus-only lanes this year on Lake Street. Crews will return early next year as weather allows to complete painting any remaining bus-only lanes.
Current closure information
-
Crews will have rolling, temporary lane closures on Lake Street between Portland Avenue and 21st Avenue in the coming weeks as they paint crosswalks and traffic lanes
Upcoming construction activities
-
This week, crews completed exterior work on the restroom building and tiling work, and began electrical and finishing work.
-
Next week, crews will continue interior work on the restroom building and begin preparing the site for construction of the future temporary B Line station.
-
This work includes the use of heavy machinery, and impacts such as vibrations, loud noise, and dust and debris are to be expected.
General Cleanup and Finishing Activities
In the coming weeks, crews will be completing finishing tasks along the entirety of the construction area. These tasks will include:
-
Painting of crosswalks, driving lanes, bus-only lanes
-
Lighting and other electrical work
-
Constructing remaining stormwater drains
Over the past weeks, the project team has received reports of street lighting out along the corridor. Crews have made significant progress in the past two weeks of fixing and restoring street lighting along the corridor and will continue in the coming weeks to ensure all lights are restored.
