Crews continue to paint new bus-only lanes along Lake Street
Construction is active along Lake Street and Lagoon Avenue in Minneapolis, with major work currently between France Avenue and 22nd Avenue.
To see where work will be happening, and what is being built, please view the interactive project map.
Staff are available to attend community events or meetings to connect and answer questions about construction. To have staff visit your next event, contact bline@metrotransit.org
As crews complete sidewalk, curb, and station work, one of the final items to complete in this year’s construction process is a mill and overlay to provide a new, smoother pavement surface. A mill and overlay process involves grinding the top layer of asphalt off the street and using a large machine to recycle and re-pave the asphalt.
Mill and overlay work on the southern half of Lake Street will take place beginning Oct. 21 between Lake & Portland and Lake & 21st Avenue.
Schedule
-
Crews continue to install underground fiber optic cable along the length of the corridor and will be returning to station locations to complete electrical wiring as well as re-wiring traffic signals and pedestrian lighting in the coming weeks.
-
Separate from B Line and Lake Street improvements, CenterPoint Energy is updating its infrastructure and gas meters in some locations. CenterPoint Energy staff may contact residents and businesses about potential short-term gas outages as they upgrade equipment. For more information on CenterPoint’s work, view its project website.
Shelter Installation
-
Almost all B Line shelters have been installed. There are no shelter installations scheduled for this week. Remaining shelter installations at Lake & Nicollet and Lake St./Midtown will be completed in the coming weeks.
-
Beginning Oct. 19, customers will board Route 21 buses at the newly constructed future B Line stations at Lake & Chicago.
-
Shelters will not be available for customer use immediately upon installation and will be fenced off. Crews will need to complete several tasks to ensure shelters are safe and ready for regular-route service. Shelters are expected to be available for customer use later this year.
Current closure information
-

Additional traffic control changes are in place for MnDOT’s Hi-Lake Project on Lake Street east of 21st Avenue. Learn more about this project.

Last week, the Metropolitan Council voted to end its easement at the Chicago-Lake Transit Center, meaning that buses will no longer use the transit center for service. Route 5 and D Line service has been moved out of the transit center since the launch of the D Line in December 2022, and Route 21 buses have been detoured out of the transit center since construction began on Lake Street in April of this year.
The Chicago-Lake Transit Center served millions of transit customers on some of our busiest routes during its time in use before changes and improvements to these routes brought customers out to Chicago Avenue and Lake Street in new, improved stations where service can be faster and more efficient.
Beginning Oct. 19, customers will board Route 21 buses at the newly constructed future B Line stations at Lake & Chicago. The shelters at these stations will be fenced off until crews can complete the necessary work to activate them for customer use.
Any questions about B Line or Lake Street improvements construction can be directed to our construction hotline at 651-356-6995 or to BLine@metrotransit.org.
