METRO E Line construction update: September 25, 2024

Detour signage for southbound France Avenue is now in place. Phased construction will allow France Avenue to remain open to northbound through-traffic for the duration of work, detouring southbound through-traffic to Xerxes Avenue between 39th Street and 60th Street. Local traffic between station intersections will be able to travel northbound and southbound.

Traffic control and pedestrian access signage is in place along France Avenue.

Work is happening at these stations:

Dates are approximate and subject to change. More details about construction detours and signage will be made available as construction progresses.

Upton & 43rd Street

Upton & 43rd Street:

• Northbound and southbound vehicle traffic can travel through the intersection.
• Construction will include partial street reconstruction, traffic signal reconstruction, new station platforms, new sidewalk, and new pedestrian ramps. 
• New bus pad and roadway pavement has been constructed on the east and west side of Sheridan Avenue.
• Construction of the bus platform pavement and shelter foundations is underway. 
• Sidewalks will remain open on at least one side of the street and pedestrian access will be maintained to homes and businesses. 

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues with platform pavement, sidewalk construction and electrical work.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with platform pavement and sidewalk construction.

France & 44th Street and Sunnyside Avenue

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues with station electrical work.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with platform pavement construction and signal and station electrical work.

France & 47th Street

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues by switching to Stage 2 on the west side of the street. This work will include demolition/removals, utility work, underground utility boring and grading.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with utility boring, grading and curb and bus pad construction.

France & 50th Street

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues with station electrical work, platform concrete construction, and preparation for installation of pavers.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with platform concrete work and preparation for installation of pavers.

France & 54th Street

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues with curb construction and roadway paving.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with asphalt paving, station electrical work, and station pavement construction.

France & 58th Street

Week of Sept. 23:

• Construction continues with curb construction and roadway grading and paving.

Week of Sept. 30:

• Construction will continue with curb construction, roadway grading and paving, and electrical work.

Work that may happen next year:

While major construction of E Line stations is happening at these locations this year, final completion of stations will occur next year as Metro Transit prepares for the beginning of E Line service. Activities in 2025 will include installation of station amenities (including shelters, real-time signs, bike racks, and benches) and equipment testing. These activities are expected to take only a few days at each site and will cause minimal disruption to traffic.

Provide feedback on bus service changes in Network Now

Metro Transit is seeking your feedback on Network Now, a plan designed to grow ridership, expand job access, and better meet the region’s changing mobility needs. This plan will directly affect bus service levels (both local bus and bus rapid transit) in the E Line corridor and the region through 2027. Please read and comment on the plan by Nov. 15.

What to expect during construction

In addition to stations, E Line construction activities will also include installation of fiber optic communication infrastructure and construction of additional pedestrian, traffic signal, bikeway, and intersection improvements delivered in partnership with Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis.  

• Work in the corridor will include station construction, utility work, pavement and intersection improvements, and traffic signal changes.
• Expect temporary lane restrictions and marked detours for traffic.
• Pedestrian access will remain for businesses and residences.
• Buses will experience detours during construction. Up-to-date information about bus detours and temporary stop locations can be found at metrotransit.org/alerts and by subscription to Rider Alerts.  
  • Southbound Route 6 buses will be detoured off France Avenue during E Line Construction.
  • Route 46 buses will be detoured off 50th Street between Ewing Avenue and Halifax Avenue.
  • See a detour map for affected routes.
• Construction will be staged at each station intersection to allow for vehicular traffic flow.
