Our interaction with land directly impacts the region’s waters — lakes, rivers, and streams. Being good stewards of water requires a comprehensive approach and collaboration between communities, watersheds, and water regulators. Everyone — residents, businesses, and communities — shares the responsibility to protect and conserve water.
The 2050 Water Policy Plan outlines policies and actions to ensure that our water resources remain sustainable and accessible for everyone, both now and in the future.
- Our metro region faces complex water quality issues, such as polluted stormwater runoff, increasing damage to lakes, rivers, and streams, contaminated drinking water sources, and high costs for treating drinking water and wastewater.
- We must consider how land and water are used, how the region’s landscapes are developed and redeveloped, and how water needs and challenges vary across different areas. Effective water stewardship requires a comprehensive approach and collaboration among communities, watersheds, and water regulators.
The plan’s four key objectives:
- Protect and make the region’s waters and water services resilient to the ongoing and future effects of climate change.
- Maximize the benefits of investments in regional water protection, planning, management, and infrastructure to ensure the health of the public and ecosystems now and for future generations.
- Manage, restore, and enhance natural waters, source waters, water services, and infrastructure to protect public and ecosystem health, ensuring a high quality of life in the region.
- Ensure the benefits of clean and abundant water and water services are accessible and equitably shared by all residents and communities, based on local needs and environmental context.

Imagine 2050 envisions the future we collectively want for the region: A prosperous, equitable, and resilient region with abundant opportunities for all to live, work, play, and thrive.
Having a vision for the future guides us as together we all make this place we call home the best it can be. Imagine 2050 includes policies for how the region will plan for and interact with land, transportation, water, housing, and parks and trails. It also addresses issues that cut across all the policy areas: climate, equity, natural systems, resilience, and public health.
We want your input on how you think these policies will impact your experience in the region and whether these plans are headed in the right direction.
Through October 7, learn more and comment on the Water Policy Plan, and its objectives, policies, actions.
