Crews are working to construct the future westbound B Line station at Lake & Chicago
Construction is active along Lake Street and Lagoon Avenue in Minneapolis, with major work currently between Excelsior Boulevard and 22nd Avenue.
|
As crews complete sidewalk, curb, and station work, one of the final items to complete in this year’s construction process includes a mill and overlay to provide a new, smoother pavement surface. A mill and overlay process involves grinding the top layer of asphalt off the street and using a large machine to recycle and re-pave the asphalt.
Crews began the first stage of mill and overlay started at Lake & Blaisdell and are traveling west along Lake Street to Dupont Avenue, continuing onto Lagoon Avenue up to East Bde Maka Ska Parkway, and then on westbound Lake Street for about one-quarter mile beyond East Bde Maka Ska Parkway. Crews can complete approximately 10 blocks of mill and overlay work each week, with work in the area between East Bde Maka Ska Parkway and Blaisdell Avenue to take approximately two more weeks.
This work involves temporary street limitations or closures, large machines that produce loud grinding noises and beeping, and smoke/odor.
This work starts as early as 6 a.m. Crews will work on the street one half at a time, with traffic limited to one lane in each direction during the process.

Separate from B Line and Lake Street improvements, CenterPoint Energy is updating its infrastructure and gas meters in some locations. CenterPoint Energy staff may contact residents and businesses about potential short-term gas outages as they upgrade equipment. For more information on CenterPoint’s work, view its project website.

New METRO B Line shelters to be installed beginning next week
-
Installation of shelters at some stations will now begin the week of Aug. 12.
-
Shelter installations will begin at the Lake & Lyndale, Lake & Chicago, and Lake & East Bde Maka Ska stations.
-
Shelter installations do not require road closures but will require the use of a small crane in the sidewalk/parking area and are usually completed within one working day.
-
Crews will be on site to detour traffic or pedestrians for any temporary impacts to sidewalks or travel lanes.
-
Shelter installations are not as loud as other forms of construction activities, but may have sounds of drilling, crews communicating, and large vehicle noises.
-
Shelters will not be available for customer use immediately upon installation and will be fenced off. Crews will need to complete several tasks to ensure shelters are safe and ready for regular service. Shelters are currently planned to be available later this year as the first phase of construction is completed.
Separately from the B Line project, a survey is now open to gather feedback about design options for a future station renovation of the Lake St./Midtown METRO Blue Line station, a key connection to the . To learn more about the project and take the survey, visit the project website.
B Line outreach staff will be at two locations weekly each Thursday to answer questions and connect with the community. We’d like to meet you at next week’s locations:
Midtown Global Market - Main Hall (920 E. Lake St.)
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Duet Coffee (1477 W. Lake St.)
