Purple Line project staff are preparing concept plans of the four design options for the White Bear Avenue Corridor. The Purple Line project is studying this corridor running along Maryland, White Bear, and Beam avenues, as an alternative route instead of the Bruce Vento Regional Trail. Staff have advanced and evaluated the four concept plans since presenting potential layouts in October 2023.
The four design options are made up of 2 or 3 design concepts shown below. There are different design concepts available north and south of Larpenteur because the roadway width changes near the Saint Paul-Maplewood border.
Staff are preparing to present these plans in the next few months during a formal engagement comment period. The presentation will include the roadway design, transit station locations, and evaluation results for the four route options. Staff will share information about community meeting and comment opportunities in a few weeks.

Over the past several months, project staff have continued to refine the station locations for the White Bear Avenue route option based on community and stakeholder feedback and design considerations. One of these refinements was presented by staff to the Corridor Management Committee (CMC) in January where CMC concurred with project staff’s recommendation to move the Larpenteur Avenue Station to Idaho Avenue for further evaluation. The final number of stations and station platform locations are subject to change as the project advances.

Public engagement continues along Maryland and White Bear avenues through meetings with community groups, tabling at community events, and canvassing.
Do you know a community group we should contact? Please let us know how to schedule time with any community group by emailing colin.owens@metrotransit.org.
The project will host community meetings in the coming months to hear your feedback on the layouts and evaluation results. Your feedback will inform the selection of the best option for the White Bear Avenue route. Your input is critical to this process!
Do you live, work, or play on Saint Paul's East Side or Downtown? We want to know your ideas for planning the areas around the METRO Purple Line BRT stations south of Maryland Ave! What do you love about those places and what do you want to change? You can help identify ways to support housing and businesses near the stations, and changes to make it safer to walk and bike. Comment on the station area map and take a 5-minute survey at bit.ly/purple-line-map.
