A rendering of the eastbound Selby & Western-Arundel station
Following the Metropolitan Council awarding a $18.7 million contract, construction of the METRO B Line, a new bus rapid transit line, will begin in late May. This new service will improve and expand equitable access by providing fast, frequent, and all-day service in the Route 21 corridor, one Metro Transit’s busiest bus routes.
Construction of the B Line between Minneapolis and St. Paul along Lake Street and Marshall and Selby avenues begins later this month, May 2023. The bus rapid transit line is anticipated to open in 2024.
In spring 2023, construction starts east of Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis and along Marshall Avenue and Selby Avenue in St. Paul. In spring 2024, construction will begin west of Hiawatha Avenue.
More than 30 stations will be built between Union Depot in St. Paul and the Uptown area of Minneapolis.
What to expect from construction
The project will also construct fiber optic communication infrastructure and additional pedestrian, signal, and pavement improvements along the B Line corridor delivered in partnership with Hennepin County, Ramsey County and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
-
Lake Street and Lagoon Avenue will be resurfaced to improve pavement conditions
-
Bus-only lanes will be created on portions of Lake Street and Lagoon and Marshall avenues to improve transit speed and reliability
-
In Minneapolis, construction will be staged to allow two-way traffic flow on Lake Street at all times, as well as to allow traffic flow in the Lake and Lagoon sections of Uptown
-
In St. Paul, construction will be staged on Marshall Avenue to allow two-way traffic flow at all times. On Selby Avenue, intersections will be fully closed to auto traffic for about a month with additional lane restrictions for longer periods
-
Buses will experience detours during construction. Up-to-date information about bus detour and temporary stop locations can be found at metrotransit.org/alerts and by subscription to Rider Alerts
For concerns or questions, the public should call the construction hotline at 651-356-6995 or email outreach staff at BLine@metrotransit.org
