Plans to bring Bus Rapid Transit service to the Purple Line corridor extending north from St. Paul are getting a fresh look.
Staff are evaluating three possible northern end points for the proposed METRO Purple Line – Maplewood Mall Transit Center, I-35 & Co. Rd. E Park & Ride in Vadnais Heights, and Century College on the White Bear Lake-Mahtomedi border (as shown below in the image).
The review is partly being driven by the need to find an option that would qualify for federal funding, which is competitively awarded based on ridership and cost projections, among other factors. Typically, federal funding covers half of a project’s capital costs.
As with most projects, labor and materials costs are rising due to inflation and supply chain shortages. Pandemic-driven changes in travel behavior and changes in regional job and population rates have lowered ridership expectations.
The Purpose and Needs of the Purple Line project that were identified and studied in the Environmental Assessment remain strong and unmet. The project will provide transit service that satisfies the long-term regional mobility and accessibility needs for businesses and the traveling public, and support sustainable development within the corridor area.
Metro Transit is leading project development with support from Ramsey County and several local partners.
