METRO D Line Construction Update- 7/29/22

Major construction nearly complete

crews removing concrete at the intersection of 7th and Olson/5th Ave.

Construction work began on April 18 and will continue throughout the year. We will be providing newsletter updates monthly.  

7th St. & Olson/5th Ave   

Construction at this intersection began the week of July 18.  
The intersection will be partially closed until early Fall, with lanes reduced.     
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.
This week, crews completed storm sewer work. Next week, crews will begin pouring curb and gutter.

Mall of America Station

Brief construction is needed at this station to complete electrical work and prepare the waiting area.

This work will begin on Aug. 3 and will continue through Aug. 12.

Pylon/Shelter Installation & Electrical Work

Work continues to install shelters and pylons at completed stations throughout the corridor.

This week, pylons were installed at:

Portland & 70th

Portland & 66th

Portland & 60th

Chicago & 56th

Next week, pylons will be installed at:

American & Chicago

Portland & 73rd

44th Ave & Girard

44th Ave & Penn

Next week shelters will be installed at:

Chicago & 26th

Chicago & 24th

44th Ave & Girard

44th Ave & Penn

What happens after major construction is complete?

After major construction is complete on D Line stations, there are several other tasks that need to be completed at the station areas before service can begin. In the coming months, staff will be completing key final steps to fully construct the station areas so they are ready for customers and for D Line service. These tasks include:

Shelter and pylon installation
Railing installation
Electrical connections
- Shelter / platform lighting
- Heaters
Fiber optic connections
Station technology installation
- Emergency telephones
- Security cameras
- NexTrip signs
Fare collection equipment installation
Safety certifications

Changes to local service will come with D Line opening in December

Beginning in December 2022, several changes will be made to the D Line corridor and connecting bus routes:  

Northside changes  

Route 5 "F" branch on 26th Ave. N. will be eliminated.  
Route 721 will no longer operate south of Brooklyn Center Transit Center (BCTC) 
Route 724 trips south of BCTC, which are currently suspended, will be permanently eliminated.

Southside changes  

Route 5 will end at 56th St. and Chicago Ave. and will operate every 30-60 minutes. 
Routes 39 and 133, which are currently suspended, will be eliminated.

Osseo Rd. construction starting Spring 2023  

Hennepin County plans to reconstruct Osseo Road from 44th Ave. to 49th Ave. starting in 2023. Local routes and METRO C and D lines will detour during Osseo Rd. construction. After construction is completed, routes will serve a new Osseo & 47th Ave. Station. Route 5 will end at 47th Ave. & Osseo Rd. and will not serve BCTC.
