METRO D Line Construction Update- 5/6/2022

Construction work continues at four stations

^{Stations are being installed at locations where significant construction was completed last year, such as Fremont & 42nd Ave}

Five stations are planned for construction in 2022. Construction work began on April 18 and will continue throughout the year. Weekly updates tracking the start of construction at the remaining stations and general construction progress will continue as this year’s construction season occurs.         

Chicago & 48th Street   

Construction at this intersection started the week of April 18.
The intersection will be fully closed for one month, with 2-3 months of lane restrictions following closure.     
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, partial street reconstruction, street pavement, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.   
The week of May 2, crews continued work on water and storm sewers. Next week, crews will begin curb and gutter work and pour concrete for bus pads.

Chicago & 42nd Street    

Construction at this intersection started the week of April 18.
The intersection will be fully closed for one month, with 2-3 months of lane restrictions following closure.     
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, street pavement, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.
The week of May 2, crews completed paving and concrete work and begin electrical work. Next week, electrical work will continue alongside work on the concrete station areas.

Chicago & 26th Street    

Construction at this intersection started the week of April 25.
The intersection will be partially closed for 3-4 months, with lane restrictions in place.     
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.
The week of May 2, crews completed storm and water system work. Next week, crews will begin concrete curb and gutter work.

Chicago & 24th Street   

Construction at this intersection started the week of May 2. 
The intersection will be partially closed for 4-5 months, with lane restrictions in place.      
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.
The week of May 2, crews began concrete removals. Next week, crews will begin water and storm sewer work.

7th St. & Olson/5th Ave.   

Construction at this intersection is planned to start later in spring. 
The intersection will be partially closed for 2-3 months, with lane restrictions in place.     
Construction will include new station platforms, shelter and pylon installation, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps, signals, and utility work.

The week of May 2, members of the D Line project team conducted field surveys and made field observations and measurements to design temporary stations at Portland & 38th St. and Park & 38th St.   

A D Line station was planned at Chicago & 38th St. but deferred following the killing of George Floyd in May 2020. Route 5 buses have been on detour on Park / Portland Avenues between 35th/36th streets and 42nd St. since May 2020 as well. Temporary stations on the detour route will support D Line operations while the City of Minneapolis is engaging with the community to redesign and reconstruct the intersection of 38th & Chicago. A future permanent station would be built as part of a coordinated construction effort.
