Today's COVID-19 updates include:
Updated Jan 22, 2021
- Total positive: 452,268
- Patients who no longer need to be isolated: 434,515
- Total approximate number of completed tests: 6,289,662
- Deaths: 6,032
o Deaths among cases that resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities: 3,836
- Total cases requiring hospitalization: 23,767
o Total hospitalized in ICU: 4,945
Numbers are cumulative since Jan. 20, 2020.
The number of lab-confirmed positive tests among Minnesota residents will be updated daily on Situation Update for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with test results from the previous day. The page also includes a map of counties with confirmed cases, and more.
This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to follow advice on community mitigation and social distancing to help us flatten the case curve.
Governor has launched a public dashboard which includes race data of cases: Minnesota COVID-19 Public Dashboard.
COVID-19 Community Testing
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) works in partnership with communities to provide safe and free on-site COVID-19 testing in areas with outbreaks, increasing cases, or other barriers to access existing test sites.

Using Data for Justice: How Changemakers Can Center Racial Equity in COVID-19 Recovery
Date: Jan. 25
Time: 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. CST
Join Sarah Rosen Wartell, president of the Urban Institute, for a special installment in Urban’s conversation series, Evidence to Action, to launch Urban’s Racial Equity Analytics Lab (REAL).
During this virtual event, Michael McAfee, president and CEO of PolicyLink, and Alonzo Plough, chief science officer and vice president of research-evaluation-learning at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will join Wartell to discuss the power of disaggregated data to help changemakers lead an equitable response to the pandemic and economic crisis. Next, Shena Ashley, vice president for the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy and cofounder of REAL, Kelly Jin, New York City’s chief analytics officer and director of the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics, and Candace Moore, Chicago’s chief equity officer, will join Wartell to discuss how leaders are using disaggregated data right now to target COVID-19 response to communities needing the most aid and how new tools at the intersection of data science and public policy can help create an equitable recovery.
The COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis has worsened long-standing racial health and economic inequities, and an uneven recovery could leave communities of color further behind. The Urban Institute’s Racial Equity Analytics Lab equips equity-focused changemakers with data and analyses to design and advance race-conscious policies that remedy structural racism and to hold governments and institutions accountable for choices that perpetuate oppressive systems
COVID-19 and the Legacy of Racism: Vaccine Hesitancy and Treatment Bias
Date: Feb. 3
Time: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST
The COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating impact on Black, Latino and other communities of color has resulted in disproportionately high rates of cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Racism, both historical and current, complicates efforts to reduce these disparities by contributing to vaccine hesitancy, treatment bias, barriers to testing, and ongoing economic and social inequities.
This webinar from National Institute for Health Care Management will explore challenges and solutions. It is part of the series "Stopping the Other Pandemic: Systemic Racism and Health."
Speakers will discuss:
- Addressing vaccine hesitancy in Black and other communities with significant health disparities
- How race-based treatment bias impacts care and health outcomes for Black and other patients from communities of color and how to bring about positive change
- A health plan’s efforts to ensure access to culturally competent care, support and educate its members about COVID-19 testing, and improve access to primary care

MDH launches electronic case investigation survey
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) launched a new, online survey for COVID-19 case investigation as part of an effort to make this public health strategy faster, easier and more efficient for Minnesotans contacted about COVID-19 cases.
“The scale of this pandemic has made us look to new methods to do our work,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “Tools like this survey will mean we can reach more people, more quickly, and ideally slow the spread of COVID-19 in Minnesota.”
Case investigation is the process to determine close contacts of someone who tested positive for COVID-19. It’s the first step when someone tests positive; contact tracing can’t happen until a case investigation is complete. The typical case investigation process involves public health workers calling someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, but contacting people by phone isn’t always the quickest or easiest method.
With the new approach, when someone tests positive for COVID-19, MDH will send them a text message inviting them to participate in a survey. By responding to the text with an email address, people who test positive for COVID-19 can complete the online survey without needing to wait for a call from public health workers. Both the texts and the survey itself will be available in multiple languages to reach as many Minnesotans as possible.
People who receive a text message but decide they would like to do the case interview by phone can simply ignore the text and wait for a call. The survey collects information about symptoms and testing dates, but also connects those who take it with help that might make isolation and quarantine less of a burden.
The survey was successfully piloted in Hennepin County the week of Jan. 11.
“There are many COVID-19 cases to interview,” said MDH Infectious Disease Director Kris Ehresmann. “This survey means people who have tested positive don’t have to wait for a call, but can just jump right in and learn more about how to keep themselves and their families safe. The survey will make it easier for us to track COVID-19, and make it easier for people to help stop the spread.”
MDH is aware that concerns about scams or spoofing calls might make Minnesotans less willing to answer the text or a call. There are a few red flags to keep in mind.
“We want people to know it’s the health department sending the message,” Ehresmann said. “We’re never going to ask for banking information, financial information, or things like your Social Security Number. When in doubt, you can call the health department at 651-201-4989, or check our avoiding phone scams webpage.”

The COVID-19 Needs Assessment Project
Under the leadership of Olihe Okoro, PhD, and Janet Kennedy, CEO of Healthy Alliances Matter LLC Company with funding from Minnesota Department of Health and multiple community organizations, a collaborative formed May 2020 to assess the needs of the Northland African Heritage community to increase community understanding and engagement around COVID-19 vaccines, testing, case interviews, contact tracing, and other COVID-19 concerns and to facilitate partnerships among community-based organizations and healthcare systems, in order to support COVID-19 prevention efforts for the African Heritage community.
The COVID-19 Needs Assessment project utilized Community Research Consultants from the African Heritage community to assist with community-based research to assess pandemic-related needs across differences in age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Some of the strategies included conducting a survey, interviews and focus groups with area African Heritage community members.

Dashboard to track statewide COVID-19 Vaccine
The Walz-Flanagan Administration launched a public vaccine data dashboard to detail the progress of COVID-19 vaccine allocation, distribution and administration across Minnesota. The dashboard, produced by Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), provides a visual and user-friendly way to view Minnesota’s key vaccination data. The dashboard includes information on the number of doses promised (allocated) to the state by the federal government; shipped to Minnesota providers; and administered to Minnesotans. The dashboard will be updated daily.
