Status of COVID-19 in Minnesota

Updated October 21, 2020

  • Total positive: 126,591
  • Patients who no longer need to be isolated: 113,158
  • Total approximate number of completed tests: 2,560,520
  • Deaths: 2,281
    o Deaths among cases that resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities: 1,608
  • Total cases requiring hospitalization: 9,147
    o Total hospitalized in ICU: 2,473

Numbers are cumulative since Jan. 20, 2020.

The number of lab-confirmed positive tests among Minnesota residents will be updated daily on Situation Update for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with test results from the previous day. The page also includes a map of counties with confirmed cases, and more.

This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to follow advice on community mitigation and social distancing to help us flatten the case curve.

Governor has launched a public dashboard which includes race data of cases: Minnesota COVID-19 Public Dashboard.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) works in partnership with communities to provide safe and free on-site COVID-19 testing in areas with outbreaks, increasing cases, or other barriers to access existing test sites.

Saliva Testing 

Saliva testing has been underway in Duluth since September 23, testing began in Winona this past Wednesday, and began in Moorhead on Saturday, October 17and in Brooklyn Park on Tuesday, October 20. 

These semi-permanent sites will offer free saliva tests to any Minnesotan who believes they need to be tested, as part of the state’s strategy to provide easy access to quick, reliable testing. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) will open an additional six sites later this month—two in Greater Minnesota and four more in the metro area—for a total of 10 such sites across the state. MDH is hiring for the COVID Community Coordinators (CCC) initiative

Application Deadline: October 26, 2020

The Minnesota Department of Health invites candidates apply for the COVID Community Coordinators (CCC) initiative.

The COVID Community Coordinators (CCC) initiative supports community-led organizations to help relay information about COVID-19 response and other support services in culturally relevant, linguistically appropriate and timely ways. CCC’s will serve the following communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19: African American, African immigrant, American Indian, Asian American Pacific Islander, Latinx, LGBTQ, and disability communities in Minnesota. Leveraging community strengths and trusted community networks is essential to responding to COVID-19 and the longstanding health inequities this pandemic has exacerbated. Communities’ needs extend beyond immediate health concerns and encompass areas such as employment, food access, housing, childcare, and legal rights. CCC’s will help community members navigate to critical resources. The following positions will staff the initiative and support community-led organizations in this work.

Minnesota’s Secretary of State's Office (SOS) is encouraging eligible voters to VOTE FROM HOME to reduce the spread of disease and keep our communities healthy. Voting from home is easy and available to any voter through the absentee balloting system. Greater Minnesota Non-Emergency COVID-19 Transportation

Information on the MnDOT, Minnesota Council on Transportation Access, and MDH collaboration on non-emergency COVID-19 Positive Client Transportation. 

Through a central contractor (Semac Transportation) this programs will cover the 80 counties outside of the 7-county metro area. Metro transportation services are being provided by the Metropolitan Council

National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute video 

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. The virus most commonly affects the lungs but it can also lead to serious heart problems. COVID-19 can damage the lungs, preventing enough oxygen from reaching the heart muscle. Housing Assistance


$100 million in Community Reinvestment Fund (CRF) to prevent homelessness and maintain housing stability for renters and homeowners through the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program. Disability Services Provider Public Health Grants


A grant program was recently created to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to people with disabilities and staff who support them by maintaining or increasing access to individualized employment services and reducing the use of congregate and sheltered workshop service settings. Providers of specific services within certain waiver programs are eligible to receive grants. The maximum initial grant award to any applicant will be $200,000. For more information, including how to apply, view this on the DSD eList announcement webpage. The application period for this grant is open from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15, 2020.
