Training for MDS Staff

This information is intended for Long Term Care Facility Administrators, Directors of Nursing, MDS Coordinators, and Registered Nurses and Social Services staff who work directly with the MDS.

The Licensing and Certification Program at the Minnesota Department of Health is offering free MDS classes. The classes will be presented by the State RAI Coordinator, Nadine Olness, RN RAC-CT and are intended for nursing home staff who complete the MDS.

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

An Overview of MDS Sections C, D, E, and Q       9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the intent of sections C, D, E and Q of the MDS
  • Identify when it is appropriate to complete the Staff Assessments for Mental Status and Resident Mood
  • Identify when Rejection of Care has occurred
  • Apply the coding instructions to accurately code sections C, D, E and Q of the MDS

Common MDS Coding Errors       1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the implications of an inaccurate assessment
  • Identify the most common MDS coding errors and how to prevent them.
  • Understand how to correct an inaccurate assessment

Writing CAAs and Developing Care Plans              9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Participants will be able to:

  • Determine what components of the MDS triggered a specific care area.
  • Identify the components of a comprehensive Care Area Assessment.
  • Use the CAA process to develop a comprehensive, individualized care plan.

Restorative Nursing and Toileting Programs        1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Participants will be able to:

  • State the requirements for coding Restorative Nursing and Toileting Programs on the MDS
  • Identify the components of a Restorative Nursing Program measurable goal
  • Identify the components of a Restorative Nursing Program comprehensive evaluation

Staff can register for one or all of the classes offered. The classes will be held at the Minnesota Department of Health, 85 East 7th Place, St Paul, MN, Check in at Room 220

Registration Information:

These classes are appropriate for staff who work directly with the MDS in nursing homes. For the best experience, participants should have some experience completing the MDS. Space is limited to 70 registration for each class.

Participants must register by the end of the business day on Friday, March 20, 2020. To register send an email to Health.fpc-cmr@state.mn.us include the participant’s name, the facility name, the participant’s telephone number, the participant’s email address, and identify which class or classes you a registering for. Please double check this information for accuracy to ensure that it’s spelled correctly. If all of the information is not provided, the participant WILL NOT be registered. A registration confirmation, with event details, will be sent to the participant’s email address. The participant should retain this email as this is the only confirmation they will receive. When the class is full, the participant’s name will be added to the wait list and they will be notified if an opening becomes available.

General Information:

Handouts for the class will be sent in an attachment to each participant’s email address one day prior to the class. Each participant must print and bring the training handouts with them to class. On the day of the class, participants should bring a blank copy of a comprehensive item set and all of the training handouts. The handouts WILL NOT be provided on the day of the class. If you forget the handouts and you have access to your email, there are several print shops in the downtown area that will print them for a substantial fee.

Please plan on arriving early, the parking ramps in the area tend to fill up early. Due to budget constraints we are unable to provide meals, snacks or beverages. Vending machines are available. The Minnesota Department of Health is located in the Golden Rule building in downtown St. Paul. The Golden Rule building is on the skyway system which offers a convenience store and a variety of full service and fast dining options.
