What to know about the Diabetes Prevention Program

Each year, the top New Year’s resolutions involve losing weight and making healthier lifestyle choices. But data show that about 80% of people who make resolutions on January 1 abandon their good intentions by Valentine’s Day.

With diabetes the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S., and one in three adults at high risk of developing diabetes (called prediabetes) — 90% of whom don’t know it — a key area of focus in Minnesota is to stop type 2 diabetes in its tracks. Learn about prediabetes in Minnesota.

Refresh your employee wellness committee

Need to refresh your employee wellness committee this year? Consider these tips:

  • Attendance waning? Offer two-year terms to your group, and rotate members in and out to keep interest and ideas fresh. People can “re-up” for an additional two years if they wish, but term limits give committee members a way out if they want to step down and make sure there are new ideas and perspectives from new members.
  • Offer actionable roles. Provide concrete roles or tasks for your committee members, such as minutes-taker, event planner, communications writer or management outreach, to name a few. Defined roles help people understand what they can contribute and may prompt them to volunteer!
  • Celebrate! It’s key to celebrate important events – good planning, a well-implemented program or activity and participation. Recognize wellness committee members at all-staff meetings, on a company intranet site and at events. Committee members will appreciate when their efforts are noticed.

Take steps to create a healthier workplace

Contact your local SHIP office to get started

Because the majority of adults in the U.S. spend half of their day at work, the workplace plays a big role in helping your employees be well.

Across Minnesota, employers are collaborating with local public health, through our Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), to create workplace wellness initiatives. To learn more about SHIP workplace efforts in your community, reach out to the local SHIP contact near you.

Fight the Flu

Tools you can use

Getting the flu feels miserable, and it can sometimes make you dangerously sick. The best ways to fight the flu are to get vaccinated, cover your cough, wash your hands, and stay home if you are sick. This can help protect you and your co-workers.

We have materials you can post at your workplace to help spread the word, not the germs.
