The Dakota County Health Promotion team has partnered with community leaders to help create a professional development network of Latino child care providers. This network is specifically for providers not associated with formal child care centers, also known as Family Friend and Neighbor (FFN) child care. The network developed from a series of community listening sessions and is based on community-driven solutions.

Over the next year and a half, six trainings will be provided on topics such as nutrition, physical activity and child safety. A total of 49 child care providers attended the first two trainings in July and October, 2018, held at the YMCA of West St Paul. Free child care allows more attendees to participate at these Saturday morning trainings. All materials and training lectures were provided in Spanish.

More than 80 percent of participants said the training helped improve their skills. More than 90 percent felt confident in their ability to use content from the training with children in their care.

This network will also be building a sustainable group of members who can support each other by sharing resources and best practices, with the ultimate goal of increasing the health and opportunities of the county’s youngest residents. This networking group serves a vital role in supporting child care providers to improve nutrition, physical activity, safety and kindergarten-readiness.
