Memory care cafe

The need to support individuals with memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers is greater than ever with 1 in 9 people in the U.S. over 65 being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The fact that the number of individuals affected by memory loss in Minnesota will likely increase was not lost on Dawn Dailey, Benson Public Library Director, who after hearing a presentation on dementia friendly communities, wanted to provide additional support with the creation of memory care kits at the library.

Countryside SHIP partnered with Benson Public Library to create 30 caregiver kits available for check out at the library that include educational resources, conversation starters and tip sheets on better communication with individuals experiencing memory loss.

In addition, the Swift County Memory Loss Group has been hosting Memory Cafés since March. Memory Cafés are designed to be a space for individuals with memory loss and dementia and their caregivers to come together to receive education, support and resources.

The Benson Public Library and Countryside SHIP are pioneers in their community for making these memory kits available. As for the future, Dailey stated, “I hope to continue to expand the memory cafes and really get the word out about dementia education.”

Kudos to Countryside SHIP for great community engagement and providing support for optimal health of caregivers.
