SHIP Statewide Meeting Update

SHIP statewide meeting

'The knowledge is in the room.'

This is the working theme for this year's meeting, and a team composed of MDH and SHIP staff is designing sessions to bring out the knowledge and experience we all have around layering strategies, building partnerships, reaching underserved communities, economic development and other topics relevant to our SHIP work.

Linda Feltes heads up the meeting content team. Feel free to reach out to her or your Community Specialist with your ideas and questions: linda.feltes@state.mn.us.

And don't forget to save the dates, July 25-26, at the Eagan Community Center.

Tobacco Cessation Training

For oral health providers

A new webinar series has been posted online. The four different slide presentations are designed for oral health practitioners to understand better their potential role in helping clients understand the dangers of tobacco use and cessation strategies. Areas of focus include: tobacco’s role as a common risk factor for oral diseases, learning how to assess the patient, motivational interviewing techniques (workshop information found in Events), available resources and referral options.

This webinar series is worth one fundamental continuing education credit, and the series can be found on the Minnesota Dental Association's website.

    This Week's Gem

    the students eating cherry tomatos

Lewiston-Altura School District has been growing its Farm to School program, with support from Live Well Winona and SHIP, for several years. This past winter, it took the program a step further. Not only did it bring in more local and regional foods to the school cafeteria, which serves on average 615 students and 25 staff daily, it also offered taste tests.

Elementary students sampled cherries and avocados, intermediate students sampled hummus and guacamole and high school students sampled Asian pears and guacamole. Educational handouts were provided to students to raise awareness about the nutritious value of the items.

Of all the data collected, this stands out:

    • 73 percent of elementary school students said they were “Likely” or “Very likely” to eat fruit instead of candy
    • 51 percent of high school students said they were “Likely” or “Very likely” to eat fruit instead of candy

"The guacamole was a HUGE hit with students and staff.  We definitely hope to add this to our menu.  Most people have never tried or even knew what an Asian pear was.  But once they tried it, they liked it," said Lori La Brec, High School Food Services.

Congratulations Live Well Winona and Lewiston-Altura. Your collaboration improved access to  healthy, fresh foods that are clearly better tasting than candy, which we already knew.
