Mental Health Update

Crisis text line

Promoting crisis text line

As of April 1, crisis text line is offering text based suicide prevention services across Minnesota. By texting MN to the number 741741, users will be connected with a counselor who will help to diffuse the crisis and connect them to local resources. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is a great resource for emergency mental health services.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services has communications resources for spreading the word about this service, which can be accessed on their website.

This Week's Gem

pubic health crew at Glenwood groundbreaking

After a decade of meetings, planning and collaborating with residents and business owners of Glenwood, ground broke last Friday, April 20, on a highly anticipated Complete Streets project.

The eight-block stretch is more important to the community than the distance indicates. The need to do road and sidewalk repairs was identified years ago, and Horizon SHIP saw an opportunity to help elevate the project to accommodate safer bike and pedestrian traffic. The end result will be a streetscape that will include an elevated bike lane, wider sidewalks and improved lighting to encourage more walking in town. It also connects two very popular bike trails, and the hope is area businesses will see increased foot traffic.

Jessica Peterson, Horizon SHIP coordinator, said, "Once we were able to discuss how important increased access to physical activity is to our residents, while also providing a great benefit to our tourists who love riding bicycles in the area during the summer months, we became a partner on this fantastic project. We see this as a win-win."

Congratulations to Horizon SHIP and the Glenwood area for persevering on a project that was badly needed, and for incorporating health into the final plans.
