This Week's Gem

little girl biting into an apple

For this first grader, front teeth were not needed as she enjoyed this delicious, Minnesota-grown apple. She was one of more than 500 students and staff from Northern (Bemidji) Elementary School to participate in the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch last Thursday.

The event is one highlight of Farm to School Month, which is designed to provide access to more fresh, healthy foods to students.  The Bemidji school district has incorporated Farm to School programming for nearly a decade, with the help of SHIP and several area farmers who supply fresh produce on a weekly basis to all of the area schools.

The Bemidji students helped make up the 235,000 registered participants spanning 619 sites in Minnesota, according to the U of M. Overall, more than 1.4 million people in six states joined in the fun.

This Gem goes out to everyone who enjoyed fresh, locally grown apples during the event and who support the Farm to School movement and improving access to healthy foods.
