Tobacco Disparities Discussion

America's tobacco crisis is examined

Smoking in the U.S. has dramatically declined in the last two decades, particularly among the country’s youngest residents. While this is good news, there are significant variations found within the country.

On Oct. 10, a live, online discussion from Washington, D.C.,  will take an in-depth look at the topics covered in a recent Washington Post article, America’s New Tobacco Crisis. The event will be moderated by the article's author, William Wan, and will feature experts who will discuss the issues faced by Americans who still smoke.

Information and registration is found on the Tobacco Disparities in the U.S. website.

This Week's Gem

Foley residents using SHIP benches

Edith and Ruth, pictured in the photo to the left, have walked downtown Foley daily for years.  They walk during all seasons  and usually go in the evening when it isn’t so warm out in the summer time.  They are out walking for at least an hour on most occasions.

Recently, the Benton County Public Health Department purchased a pair of benches using funds from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP).  Since the benches were installed a few months ago, Public Works Director Mark Pappenfus has noticed the pair sitting on the benches resting while they are on their walk, and Edith says they walk from bench to bench.  What a great concept and a way to make walking for any length of time more manageable.

The City of Foley has purchased eight more benches made from the same materials, recycled milk jugs.  The ladies have some ideas of where more benches could be placed in the future to help expand their walking route.

Way to go Benton County, Edith and Ruth for demonstrating the importance of physical activity, rest and when to blend the two together!
