Last month, North Country SHIP completed a worksite wellness
collaborative in Hubbard County that focused on teaching foundational skills
and best practices for developing a sustainable culture of health within their
businesses.
Each site chose at least one health initiative to focus on.
For example, the electric company, bank and school each chose to create
healthier food options within their work environments. The nursing home created a policy to become a
tobacco-free campus and the hospital focused on nutrition labeling in their
cafeteria and coffee shop areas.
All
participants had strong leadership support and indicated they found this to be
a valuable experience.
Please send those gems
Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue? Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or community specialists for:

List Available for MDE Administrative Reviews
The list of schools receiving an administrative review
from MDE in 2017-2018 is now available. Specific reviewer assignments will
be made this summer and the School Food Authorities will be contacted early
fall 2017 with additional information.
The review list and
additional resources may be accessed on the State Administrative
Review webpage. Optional training resources related to the administrative review may
be accessed on the School Nutrition
Program Training webpage.
Applications Currently Being Accepted
The CHOICES team is now accepting applications from state, city
and county health agencies to partner together to examine the cost
effectiveness of selected childhood obesity initiatives. The expected
impact of this partnership will be to engage decision makers and promote
discussion and action to ensure that more of our scarce local, state and
national public health resources are directed towards more cost-effective
interventions.
Local health agencies representing one of the following three
geographic areas are eligible to apply:
- States
- Large Cities (with populations of 500,000 or more)
- Large Counties (with populations of 1 million or more)
The partnership will run from July 2017 to June 2018, and the
CHOICES team intends to fund up to four health agencies during this 12-month
project period. Monetary assistance will be available (contingent upon
funding) at an expected average of $50,000 per awardee. Note that the
size of the award may vary based on project scope and awardees.

On May 10, MDH released an updated health advisory on the
health risks of nicotine. The advisory is based on a summary of the latest
research on the health risks of nicotine, and reflect findings from the U.S.
Surgeon General’s new report E-cigarette Use Among Youth
and Young Adults. The advisory reports that nicotine exposure can
harm brain development during adolescence and poses a serious health risk for
youth.
Check out the materials below, and feel free to distribute to your networks and
partners.

SHIP
Success Stories | Helpful Hints
We look forward to receiving your draft success story by May
31. In the meantime, we have a few helpful hints to guide you.
Identify your
success. For this purpose, it is not
the funding of a new SHIP effort or partnership. Think about it in terms of an
effort that’s already in place and that you can show results (or potential
reach).
Find a real person. If a person, or group of people, benefited from
your work and you can engage them to talk about the benefits, it helps make the
story relatable, compelling and interesting.
Just as important, it provides a concrete example that can be used to
help guide other grantees.
Have fun! This is
a chance to toot your horn, and it shouldn’t be stressful.
Remember, we are here to
help! Feel free to reach out to Pete
Raeker (peter.raeker@state.mn.us) or Julie Bartkey (julie.bartkey@state.mn.us) for questions, concerns or additional assistance.
Nora Shields-Cutler is transitioning out of SHIP and her role as a Community Specialist, and will move to the Healthy Communities team as the Food Systems Coordinator.
Many of you are familiar with Nora and her exemplary work as a CS, providing detail-oriented, collaborative leadership to SHIP grantees.
Nora has a Masters in Public Health and Masters in Social Work, as well as a wealth of experience in building partnerships and engaging stakeholders that will serve her well in the Food Systems Coordinator position, which begins this week; she will continue to work with grantees throughout May. All grantees will be notified of the change by your CS shortly.
Congratulations, Nora!
