Opportunity to Partner with CHOICES

The CHOICES team is now accepting applications from state, city and county health agencies to partner together to examine the cost effectiveness of selected childhood obesity initiatives. The expected impact of this partnership will be to engage decision makers and promote discussion and action to ensure that more of our scarce local, state and national public health resources are directed towards more cost-effective interventions.

Local health agencies representing one of the following three geographic areas are eligible to apply:

  • States
  • Large Cities (with populations of 500,000 or more)
  • Large Counties (with populations of 1 million or more)

The partnership will run from July 2017 to June 2018, and the CHOICES team intends to fund up to four health agencies during this 12-month project period. Monetary assistance will be available (contingent upon funding) at an expected average of $50,000 per awardee. Note that the size of the award may vary based on project scope and awardees.

First Breastfeeding-friendly Child Care Designation in Minnesota

Congratulations to Kind Hearts Daycare, located in Princeton, for receiving the first MDH designation of a breastfeeding-friendly child care. The designation gives parents another stamp of quality that they can use when selecting a child care provider.

Julie Hume, Kind Hearts owner, says “I think this is very important because breastfeeding mothers need to know we are here to support them and their child.”

Across Minnesota in 2016, the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) provided training and follow-up assistance for nearly 250 child care providers. This included sharing best practices for breastfeeding support. More than 9,000 Minnesota children attended a child care that partners with SHIP.

Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue? Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or community specialists for:
