Moving Forward in Healthy Food Retail | March 7-8

Date:  March 7-8
Location: American Lung Association (ALA), 490 Concordia Ave, St. Paul
Cost:  Free

Audience: The primary audience for this training are Statewide Health Improvement Partnership and Community Wellness Grant grantees who have done, or plan to do work to improve healthy food availability, accessibility, and affordability in corner stores, grocery stores and restaurants.

Note: There are a limited number of spaces. If we do not have space for all interested grantees, preference will be given to those who have integrated this work into their 2017 work plans.

Purpose: Join your colleagues to listen, learn, share and collaborate to improve the retail food environment in your communities. Tools and tips will be shared to help you: assess the food environment, engage customers and retailers, and increase the availability and sales of healthy foods and beverages, in small stores, grocery stores and restaurants.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will:

  1. Be prepared to conduct assessments of the retail food environment and/or train others to conduct simple assessments; and summarize and share results to effectively drive improvements
  2. Develop a better understanding of the business landscape to effectively engage, support and collaborate with small store, grocery store and restaurant owners to offer and promote more healthy food and beverage options
  3. Be able to utilize knowledge and tools to help retailers source and merchandize fresh produce
  4. Understand how regulations, incentives and policies can be leveraged to increase access to healthy foods in retail settings

Technology Requirements: It is important that each grantee brings a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop. It would be ideal if everyone could bring a laptop, but only one per grantee is required. This will allow for hands-on practice with the software tools. 

Also, we have requested your non-government email account in the registration process, as we sometimes have difficulties when sending emails to these types of email accounts. To ensure you are able to practice with the Store Audit Center software tool during the training, please plan to bring a mobile device or tablet that is linked with your non-government email address.

Webinar | Curbing Unhealthy Food & Beverage Marketing to Students | March 9

From sugary drink ads on vending machines to fast food logos on stadium scoreboards, promotions for unhealthy foods are common in U.S. schools. They encourage students and staff to make unhealthy choices and compromise the educational mission of schools.

In July 2016, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its final rule strengthening requirements for local school wellness policies. For the first time, the USDA now limits unhealthy food and beverage marketing in schools, allowing in-school promotions only for foods and beverages that meet the USDA’s Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.

Join the webinar to learn how the USDA's final rule affects food and beverage marketing in schools. Presenters will provide practical tips for school districts on how to remove unhealthy marketing and handle challenges that arise as they work to comply with the new requirements.

Session Description

During the media relations/media advocacy training, you will be separated into groups and explore public health communications challenges. Our trainer will walk you through several exercises that will help you build effective communications strategies around those challenges. Groups will report out throughout the training session, sharing components of their communications campaigns. You and your community partner will leave with tools you can use for your local communications efforts.

Media Relations

  • Gain knowledge effective communications outreach and types of media.
  • Learn some basic rules for working and interacting with the news media.
  • Develop skills for creating successful communications campaigns.
  • Learn how to use effective storytelling to enhance messages.
  • Acquire a working understanding of effective and ineffective messengers.
  • Review news releases, news advisories, letters to the editor and op-eds.

Session Description

The active living portion of the workshop will be highly interactive and relevant to SHIP work at any stage of implementation, whether you are a new or seasoned staff. This portion of the meeting will cover implementation strategies for comprehensive planning and the technical assistance resources available. We will also provide additional clarification of public health’s role in the planning process of master plans. MnDOT staff will provide updates on local work that may intersect active living efforts and how you can leverage MnDOT efforts to advance your work. We will review the new Minnesota Walks: Framework for Action tool and discuss implementation steps. In addition, you will have a chance to give feedback on additional resources you need to advance local comprehensive planning or Minnesota Walks implementation.

  • Learn about technical assistance resources available for public health professionals to integrate into the comprehensive planning process.

Joyce O’Meara | OSHII Early Childhood Specialist | Retiring

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of Joyce O’Meara, our OSHII Early Childhood Specialist. Joyce’s last day is March 3. Joyce has been a remarkable member of the OSHII staff team. She has been the backbone for the Early Care and Education Setting since the inception of SHIP and for other CDC funded programs. She joined OSHII in 2009 and has been the first and only Early Childhood Specialist providing subject matter content and expertise to SHIP.

We do plan to hire in the next few months and will keep you updated. In the interim, Amy Michael who works on the health care team has agreed to assist with some of the duties. Amy has a Masters Degree in Education from NYU and has worked in early childhood care settings in the past. Amy will be assisting with as many grantee calls that focus on the child care setting that she can and will be ensuring the process for the Breastfeeding-Friendly Child care recognition program continues.

Tri Wellness at Work

Tri Wellness at Work is a joint initiative between Sherburne, Benton and Stearns Counties intended to engage companies in planning, assessment and implementation of workplace wellness programs. Tri Wellness at Work helps interested employers strengthen their workplace culture and offer more opportunities for employees to make healthy choices.

Through the SHIP grant, county staff have provided technical assistance and funding to businesses in the Tri-County area.  Sherburne County has been an active participant in this collaborative, and with the help of SHIP dollars, they’ve installed a healthy snack station. The new station provides healthier and more affordable choices and has received an overwhelmingly positive response from employees. After just two short days, the snacks were entirely sold out and needed immediate restocking! Below are some of the comments received within 24 hours of implementation.

  • “Oh my gosh….I love this idea!  Thank you to the Wellness Committee!”
  • “I love this idea and have made my first purchase!  The pricing is perfect thank you”
  • “AWESOME!  A big thanks to the Health & Wellness Committee, it is very exciting to have this option available to us!  J
  • “Oh my gosh , this makes me very happy! No more salty vending machine snacks !! THANK YOU!”

Foundational Skills | Community Leadership Team

Every other month, MDH hosts a call to support SHIP grantees to build strong leadership for health through Community Leadership Teams.

A recording and materials from the February Community Leadership Team Call are posted on Basecamp. The call focused on a review and interpretation of data collected about CLTs through December 2016 REDCap reporting, and on orientation of new CLT members. Please share additional materials that are used to orient new CLT members on Basecamp.

New Resource | Food Networks in Minnesota

The University of Minnesota Extension is pleased to announce the rollout of a new web page: Food Networks in Minnesota.

Food networks play an important role in advancing food systems change across Minnesota. The new web page provides instructions about how to sign up for the email list and quarterly meetings for food network members and supporters. You can also explore the map and directory of food networks in Minnesota to connect with and learn from food network leaders and others working on food systems change in Minnesota communities and across the state.

These online resources are one of several ways University of Minnesota Extension supports food networks in Minnesota. Health and Nutrition staff also conduct research, host educational events like the Convening of Food Network Leaders (including the summary report), and lead the engagement function of the Minnesota Food Charter Network.

New Healthy Food, Safe Food Action Guide Available

Care about healthy food access and food safety? The University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Department of Health are pleased to share the newest Minnesota Food Charter companion resource, the “Healthy Food, Safe Food Action Guide.”

The guide offers resources and tools to help food safety professionals and healthy food advocates with information, proven strategies and contacts to support partnerships that seek to ensure access to safe, healthy food for all in settings such as farmers markets to schools to food shelves.

The guide is available at the University of Minnesota Extension website.

Want a toolkit to help support you and your partners as you implement strategies from the Guide? Around the year 2020, Minnesota’s 65+ population is expected to eclipse the K-12 population for the first time in history. In the fire service we already see the 65+ population has a higher risk of dying in a residential fire and fall injuries are disproportionately high in Minnesota compared to many of our neighboring states.

The Remembering When program, from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is a complete fire and fall education program that fire department, health care providers and other safety professionals can use in their own communities to help reduce death and injuries due to fires and falls. Meredith Hawes along with Kelly Ransdell, Regional Educators with NFPA, present the program.

    Second Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition | Sept. 18-20

    Date:  Sept. 18-20
    Location: Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, Prior Lake

    This annual conference brings together tribal officials, researchers, practitioners, and others to discuss the current state of Indigenous and academic scientific knowledge about Native nutrition and food science and identify new areas of work.

    A reception will be held in the evening of Sept. 17 for those who are traveling to the conference. Registration begins in March.
