Resource ~ Promoting Active Living in Rural Communities ~ Active Living Research

New research brief summarizes current research on elements of the rural built environment that may be related to obesity and physical activity.

Trainings ~ Walk! Bike! Fun! ~ October

Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota has  training sessions in September and October of the Walk! Bike! Fun! Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Curriculum planned for Greater Minnesota and encourages schools and community partners to invite teachers and other educators. The trainings are FREE and open to people interested in teaching the curriculum.  More information and registration for the training can be found here.

Event ~ International Walk to School Day ~ Oct 7

Celebrate Walk to School Day this fall! 

Register your event at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/ to be listed on the national walk to school day participation map. Last October nearly 100 Minnesota schools registered events online.

Looking for more information on walk to school day? The new Minnesota SRTS Resource Center has a tipsheet on planning events, as well as free downloads to help promote the event, make stickers, and more.

Lastly, don't forgot to take pictures and share your story! The SRTS Network call will highlight events from around the state on the October 15 call. Pictures and stories will also be shared on the new resource center. Email us at saferoutes.dot@state.mn.us to share your event. 

Resource ~ Healthy Schools Webpage ~ CDC

CDC has launched a NEW Healthy Schools webpage with all sorts of updates resources and messaging!  One of the new models being embraced is the WHOLE SCHOOL, WHOLE COMMUNITY, WHOLE CHILD.   Check out this new site and make sure to pass it along to your school partners too.

Shape America has released a new website dedicated to active schools; “Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program or CSPAP."

Event ~ Farm to School Month ~ October

October is Farm to School Month and a time to celebrate the connections that are happening between schools and local food sources. There are many ways to celebrate! Find out how to get your crunch on, source local and share stories! Register for the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch today! Learn about the food day menu on October 22 that highlights regional chicken, vegetables, apple and grains. 

Video ~ Implementing and Enforcing Smoke-Free Housing Policies ~ HUD

What housing providers need to know to go smoke-free. This video covers benefits and obstacles and how to address them. It presents tips to enforcing the policy and shows how a resident family of smokers adapted to the policy.

Funding Opportunity ~ Visiting Lectureships Program ~ Due Oct 30

The American Academy of Pediatrics Julius B. Richmond Visiting Lectureship Program provides grants of up to $3,000 to support educational meetings aimed at protecting the health of children and families by controlling tobacco smoke exposure. The Call for Proposals is posted here, with a submission deadline of October 30.

In the News ~ Choice Hotels Going Smoke-Free ~ July 2016

Choice Hotels International, Inc., one of the world's leading hotel companies, announced that Comfort Inn will implement a 100-percent smoke-free policy beginning July 1, 2016. This will make Comfort the largest hotel brand in the United States to do so, with more than 1,700 properties across the country. Read more here. 

Report ~ Nicotine Replacement Therapy in the Hospitalized Patient ~ US Pharmacist

When smokers are admitted to a hospital, healthcare professionals are in an optimal position to promote smoking cessation. Whether the smoker is admitted to the ICU or to a general medical floor, research shows that nicotine replacement therapy in conjunction with behavioral counseling increases the chance of abstinence. Workshop ~ Comprehensive Planning - It's Not the Same Old, Same Old ~ Bloomington, Oct 28

Last week the Metropolitan Council issued its new system statements for the required 2016 comp plans to be completed by local jurisdictions in the seven-county area. Because there has been a relative lack of land use changes since the last plan was submitted (due to the recession), many metro communities believe there is a limited need to devote time, energy and resources to their upcoming comprehensive planning process. The reality is that there are compelling issues confronting local governments as they plan for the next 30 years. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to gain a “big picture” perspective on the issues and how they interrelate plus practical information on how to implement an effective planning process. In addition, participants can select two of four breakouts to explore specific needs in more depth.

Message Testing Planned for SHIP

OSHII is in the process of developing a brand identity and key messaging for the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) in order to better connect with a variety of statewide stakeholders.

The branding research firm Creation in Common (creationincommon.com) will conduct focus groups via webinar in October to test those messages. Separate focus groups are planned for these target audiences: SHIP coordinators, Community Leadership Team members, Public Health Directors and Legislators.

Because capacity is limited at the webinars, a representative group from each target audience will be invited to participate.

Results of this work will be available later this year.
