Southwest West Central Service Cooperative (SWWC) participated in a New Teacher Center (NTC) webinar focused on actionable mentoring and holistic induction strategies to support new special education teachers. The Cooperative offered practical approaches for prioritizing differentiated support for beginning special education teachers designed to meet their specific challenges, from legal requirements to a wide range of student learning needs.
SWWC currently brings deep experience as one of 10 grantees supporting the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Minnesota Statewide Teacher Mentoring program and the Teacher Mentorship and Retention of Effective Teachers Grant (TMRG). SWWC is also a leader in partnership with NTC in the Education Innovation and Research (EIR) grant to provide school-based, job-embedded support through instructional coaching emphasizing social-emotional learning (SEL).
You can access the Mentoring New Special Education Teachers webinar recording and highlights, key takeaways and special education-specific resources.

MDE is seeking volunteers to serve as reviewers for the FY26 Grow Your Own (GYO) grant competition.
Reviewers must have the following minimum qualifications:
- Familiarity with the structure and function of Minnesota’s educational system sufficient to understand teacher preparation pathways for adults, secondary students or both.
- Disclose any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest that may exist during the grant review process. This includes but is not limited to:
- Reviewers or their immediate family being employed by a FY26 grant applicant.
- Reviewers or their immediate family who are employed by a teacher preparation institution may serve as a grant reviewer. However, they may not review grant applications from applicants their institution is partnering with.
- Commit the time to complete the duties of the role.
Reviewers can anticipate one hour of training, five to eight hours of independent reviewing time (depending largely on the number of reviewers we are able to recruit and number of applications assigned), and one to two hours after independent reviews are complete. Reviewer training is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 3 to 4 p.m. The training webinar will be recorded for those who are unable to attend live.
To volunteer, please complete the GYO Grant Reviewer Interest Form so we can collect your name and contact information.
For assistance with questions about the reviewer process, contact Tyler Livingston (651-582-8427).
